Refurbishing old Squier Strat

Just to share a little "refurbishing" project I did on an old MIK strat. Not as "epic" as some of the bigger projects done by fellow softies though.

Old factory installed tuning heads that doesn't stay in tune...

Body of the guitar was stripped to facilitate the shielding process...

Jammed pots, weak pups and faulty input jack.

What looks like "mould" to me. But I maybe wrong, but decided it was too yucky to work with and got a new one instead.

New tuners, had to fill up the old drilled holes and drill new ones to facilitate the new grovers.

ew.. dude, the old bridge was really disgusting haha.

ANyways, great job! Looks so so so much better than before. Im sure it sounds way better as well.

Maybe polish up the frets as well? The hardware so new then the fret oxidised haha

Haha, agreed, the old bridge was really disgusting. Though I think a few re-frets/fret dress is in order after some playing cause the first few frets are beginning to get worn out.

bro you changed to Gotoh not Grovers. a little mistake there.

did the shielding help reduce the hum? I did the same thing before but it hardly made any difference for me. anyway, with the new tuners and bridge, the guitar definitely should play and sound better.

good to see that there are people doing such repairs themselves. I feel that is more rewarding compared to sending it to a shop. you must have spent a lot of time reading and fixing up. great effort!

Opps... Haha, I didn't realised that. Sorry typo. Think in all my excitement, I made a little mistake.

The shielding helps a little, there is still some hums when I play it at home where there is florescent lighting, but when I brought it out during a jam, it was almost hum free.

I did some research with regards to the shielding, wanted to use either conductive paint or copper shielding, but those two were not easily available, so I decided on the next best thing which is aluminum foil. Doing the repairs myself is definitely rewarding, but it also helps to have a supportive mum who didn't mind me using their aluminum foil =P and a supportive dad who is willing to help me with the drilling.
