Refurbishing guitars

Hi i have a vintage instrument in possession and the condition is quite bad. Scratches and dings aplenty.

Is there any possible way to savage the condition? Like stripping it of lacquer and reapplying it. Is it possible to apply this refurbishing on small areas on the guitar instead on the entire body?

What are the likely costs of a refurbishing job?

Experienced players...please help.

Hi,

About vintage instrument, we have to see what it is and what is your exact need.

For example a early 60s Fender Stratocaster (pre CBS), is very beat up, a few large bare wood patches due to contact with body during playing, all original parts. Still in good playing condition, will be worth good money. Even if not in good playing condition, still worth good money.
If the owner repaint the body or repair the paintwork, we can expect 50% drop in value.

If your instrument is not worth much. eg. hofner electric guitar 70s. See if you want to fix it up, your personal choice.

One note. Some of the parts will no longer be available, so check with the luthier.

Re lacquer certain patches, not reccomended. You will never get the same aged shade as the rest of the guitar, so the patches will still be very obvious. Look more nautral bare as it is.

Super glue stain. Ho boy, that patch is a goner. Have to sand it down. Body repaint involves a lot of process, from striping, sanding, smoothing, undercoat, further smoothing, a number of coats in between. Cost quite a bit too, not to mention you can wait anywhere from 2 to 6months.

Lastly, if you need the job or more advise, just bring it down to my friends shop, Guitar Connection, Kevin. Just say I refer one. (opposite davis guitar)

Is re-lacquering a small area of the guitar which has a sunburst color advisable?
