refet or fret leveling?

my epiphone les paul custom is not playing very well these days and even after i took it to get it completely set up, its still not playing like the guitar that i spent my money on in the first place. i have found out that the problem lies with the frets being quite uneven but my budget does not allow for a full refret at the moment, yet im not sure that there's enough fret material for leveling and crowning. any thoughts on this?

Go back to the tech that set it up for you and ask him about the fret life/ fret material. If there isn't enough to level then suck thumb alr haha.

How old is the guitar? If it's less than ten years and you don't play a few hours everyday, then you don't need a fret job. You have to be really hard (like SRV) to grind them down that bad. Normally you can relevel frets two to three times before you need to do a complete refret.

If the guitar is new or not played hard, it sounds like the frets are uneven because they are coming out of the board. Play until you find the high frets and try and put a sheet of photocopy paper under the fret. If the paper fits, then the fret is coming out of the fretboard as often happens on cheaper guitars. This is messy to fix as the frets have to be reglued in place, but if it is only a couple then you chould be ok.

Go and see Raymond at Luther's store and tell him Mark from Oz sent you. He's a mate and should be able to explain the problem and solution for you.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

Mark.
