hi all, i have a ibook g4 and im thinking abt using it for some basic home recording. i'll be using garageband. not really looking for really good sound quality, just something decent and low-cost.

so, what equipments do i need, like cables? and where can i get them?

thanks in advance.:)

Hi dosh! :D

What are you recording? Guitar/bass/keyboards or vocals (mics). :?:

solution 1:
If you are just trying out, you can record direct into the iBook's mic/line-in.
Get an 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. I bought one from Ranking (Bras Basah complex) for $1.50 (if my memory is correct). If you are going to use a mic with an XLR cable, then you have to get an XLR to 1/4" adapter ($6 ???) and use it with the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter into the iBook.

solution 2:
A step up will be buying a USB/Firewire interface. I'll recommend the Line6 ToneportGX ($80 for now). It comes with the Gearbox software (amps/effects simulation for guitar/bass/voice). I'm using it and i'm happy with the results. Check out the Line6 website for more info.

For solution 1, the recording will not be "clean" and you'll most probably hear some noises. Solution 2 will give you better recordings/result. Its due to the "analog to digital conversion stuff" which i'm at a loss to explain...

Once you're comfortable with recording and get the hang of it, then its good to look at other "better/more expensive" equipment.

1) Usb or Firewire (FW) audio interface.
2) An external hard disk, preferably FW.
3) Head/earphones or HiFi stereo
4) Microphone if you're recording Vox

That's it. GarageBand provides all the DSP Efx you'll need. If you're on a really tight budget, get a 1/4" to 1/8" jack adapter. You'll have to bear with a hell lot of noise though. Work with what you have... Best way to learn. Above all, have fun!
