hi there, decided to jump ship to bass from guitar haha . . . what a nostalgic feeling creating these kind of thread, still rem the time when i asked something similar on gear guitar, and went to sweelee to buy my first bob marley sig les paul  sweet memories

okay back to the topic,
i have a budget of around 800(flexible, can up or down by quite some), im looking for a bass. I really know nothing about bass, tried my friend rbx, the horn is big hitting my chest, action seems real high (compared to my e.guitar), not too sure if his wasnt set up properly or because im used to e.guitar. Im hoping to get something with smaller horn (rbx is a no no). Genre i wish to play will be heavy rock, rock, heavy blues. What are some brands i can keepa lookout for? I am current looking at fender japan, ibanez(horn seem big), yamaha(big horn too), musicman sub series, warwick. What scales are available in bass? Is 24 fret, 21 fret, 20 fret import for bass too? can i do bending on bass? what is the diff between p-bass and jazz bass beside the shape? p-bass for slapping or?

that's a lotta questions lol, lets wait for the pros to respond :D

i'm kinda noob but i think i can answer a few questions... 24 frets would mean that you can play higher la. 22 lower... 20 lowest... but rock doesnt really need such high notes normally. jbass and pbass sound diff too and pick up arrangement different... how diff... i'll wait for the pros to answer... but for what you're playing... should get a pbass. you can slap on any bass... just depends on the sound that you're looking for. and yes you can bend, tap, and do almost anything you can do on the electric guitar on the bass...

if you want to slap... normally the action'd be higher. but what you're playing... hmm slapping is not that primary la.

brands you can look out for...i think it'd be warwick rockbass... not so much of the original warwick... unless it's second hand... you can also look out for second hand basses... can get some pretty neat stuff at that price.

my 2 cents worth(hopefully it's worth 2 cents)

all the best in your hunt

Yeah, like what ahkiatt said, P Bass is good for you. Your musical preferences require a punchy bass to cut through; and that's the P Bass tone for you!

20 frets is good enough for me. For 800, I recommend a MIJ Fender P, it's solidly constructed and offers great tone. It also means you can upgrade should you feel the need to later on.

IMO, slapping is easier to do on lower action. I have my current bass set-up to extremely low action; cos I do like to play slap and it's somewhat easier for me to play. But you gotta try, sometimes you want the tone you get from hitting the strings hard, to get that clonky,mid-ish sound from a P bass.

Btw, dont forget your amp! Personally, I believe the amp plays a great ( if not more important ) role in determining your overall quality of sound. If you do not mind listening to somewhat less-than-stellar tone at home, settle for any amp. If not get the classic Peavey Microbass, great sound and power for a smaller hole in your wallet!

Oh btw, here are some websites to kick-start your bass playing:

1 : www.cyberfretbass.com
2 : www.ultimate-guitar.com [ there are some good bass articles ]
3 : www.bassplayer.com
4 : www.bassmasta.net [ great source of bass tabs ]

Hope this helps!

j bass is generally better for slap, cause it has a bridge and neck pickup. whereas the pbass only has a mid split P. Actually, if you solo the bridge PU, it can cut through better than the pbass. A pbass sounds kinda beefier, and rounder though. But a jbass is more versatile...

i think theres like more than 4 jbass players for every 1 pbass players in singapore.... i saw that theres so many ppl w jazz bass and i was like heck, ill just get a pbass for the heck of it.

you're the first person i heard complaining about the horns of the two major brands of bass guitars in singapore ...

anyway ... it can be fixed with a little posture correction lah .. e.guitar and bass requires a totally different feel and approach to it so i suggest you don't bother about the horns first ..

brands to recommend .. for heavy rock etc ...

Yamaha RBX series .. (yes, the one you said no-no to, trust me ... you'll find that Yamaha basses meet up to the challenge of what's required tonally in music today and they do it really well)

Ibanez SRX Series (Check out the SRX500, SRX700 or any of the SRX series, sounds really good with a pick on the strings ...)

Squier P-bass Modded (you can find a relatively cheap P-bass from Squier and mod it out and it'll sound good. Of course with a good setup too)

2nd Fender MIM or CIJ P or J bass(if you can find this online ... and i'm sure they'll pop up here and there once in a while, you've got a good bass on hand)

OLP MM-2 (they make surprisingly good copies of Stingrays)

Scheter basses (found at G77 ... i didn't bother to check up on them because they didn't appeal to me but looks very rockish and sounded rockish to me)

it's exhaustive lah .. so do more research and determine what you really need and want ...

yamaha rbx374

its an active bass, and very affordable, even has 24 frets

nice and punchy, and can also be very rounded

but too bad you don't like the horn

I'll recommend

1. Ibanez BTB series
2. Yamaha BB series
3. Warwick Rockbass

Definitely 24 frets is more versitile

Go for MIJ Fender

For $890, start off with a MIJ Fender P or J bass. You can order for www.luthermusic.com

Reason is no matter what level you play, a Fender will not disappoint u.n Having a Fender Japan Bass can last you for a few good years or even 10yrs and above. Untill then you should had save enough for top cream bass... Eg... Stingray 5, Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass etc...... and above.

For fender mij j-bass
http://www.luthermusic.com/cgi-bin/WB_ItemPageGen.pl?t=1165631247&Pid=103&Gid=2080000

Surf around. There is also th p-bass version.
Recommend Fender as the Quality and standard of the tone is there.
As for choice of p or j bass.... depends on what types of music and tone u prefer. For heavy, rock.. get P-bass... Others music genere get Jazz bass as it can last you a long time.

if you worry about the bass-side arm protruding into your chest, this one would be a good consideration:

sub: reminds me of gibby bass...the classic les paul and double cut les paul...

certainly reek of Gibson...

more importantly, i've tried this bass countless times (mostly to test amps...), it's simply superb for the money...
