Recommendations for a Bass

i know it's kinda weird for a pianist to suddenly develop an interest in a bass but lately i've been playing around the bass strings of my classical guitar and creating my own basslines and i found it kinda amazing at wad kinda sounds i could produce wif juz the bass strings of my guitar.

okay anyways i juz wanna know which bass should i get as a beginner?

since a handful of u mentioned in the "What's the difference" thred that there is no such thing as a beginner's guitar , i need people to enlighten me on the ideal bass for me....

i'm looking for a bass which places more emphasis on clean and warm tones say maybe for Jazz and Funk music i would say...

i'd recommend the following: value for money + good tone on a budget

Squier P-Bass Special (List: $600)

OLP MM-2 (List: $540)

i'm most probably gonna head down to swee lee bras basah and ranking sports tml...any bass guitars i should look out for there?

and is there any other guitar shops nearby excluding peninsula?

Indeed. It is an officially licensed product ( hence OLP) manufactured in asia to approximate specs. Apparently the neck is really smooth thanks to the unfinished maple used, but everything else leaves much to be desired.

what about other types of bass guitars? i know Fender is out of the question unless of course it's about 800 plus den i might consider....

i asked about jazz basses but my fren told me he does not like the jazz bass because it can only give warm tones as compared to other versatile basses.but i would prefer a bass that could give quality warm and clean tones than having a versatile bass being a jack of all trade master of none....but i'm still open for any suggestion besides Fender and Ibanez...

i'm of the opinion that the Fender Jazz bass is one of the most versatile ever. it's a reflection of Leo's genius, especially the pickup configuration, evidence that he wasn't out to duplicate his prior success- the Precision bass...

about the OLP MM2- it aimed to replicate the Sting Ray definitely, but it's full of compromises. however, it's one of the best budget maple fretboard bass ever. if you like the Stingray but can't quite keep up with the actual asking price, the SUB bass (looks terribly similar but that's about it- tone is all its own) is definitely one to check out. the 4-string passive version lists for $980 8)

hmmz but for a single pickup bass its tone is excellent ?

hmmz i tot for a single humbucker ur tone is somewhat limted ? cant do e full tonal range ?

this is interesting !!

how isit different from the OLP bass u listed in the fender j bass thread ? both are sub basses but one is 500 plus at davis and the other is 980 in list price ?

the OLP isn't Ernie Ball, it's a licensed copy no doubt. also, the SUB is american...

i find the bass to be more dynamic when it comes to volume control than the guitar. you'd be surprised by the diff tones obtainable by simply backing off the volume knob. the single humbucking Sting Ray was never conceived to serve a single purpose, Leo made sure of that... 8)

wow ...

so the musicman sub is actually a lower cost version of the musicman ?
icic ... wow thats fantastic ... yea ... leo fender single handedly contributed alot to the creation and the development of the bass... gosh ... i m amazed...

then wads with the G&L series of guitars and basses that he designed and engineered ?

are they equivalent of his musicman / fender basses standards ?

the G&L guitars & basses are definitely up there with the Fenders & EBs...

many people thought that the SUB was a stingray on a budget- not quite. looks similar but tones on offer are different, namely because the SUB has a lighter body & satin finish (no lacquer).

cool ! how different are the tones ?

so the sub is sort of like the son of the musicman stingray

same design , same style , same config

but different sound and tonal range ?
