Recommendation on Bass guitars

Am a beginner, looking for my first bass guitar.
I am willing to budget upto $1k. Genres will be (j)Pop/(j)Rock/Jazz. Have already set my eyes on the followings;

Squier Standard Jazz Bass
Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass
Fender Standard Jazz Bass (off budget)

(Yes, Im biases. LOL)

Any other recommendations are also welcome.

I've been following this forum for quite sometime, Btw, first post! YEAH!

Thanks.

you have $1k but you want to get Squiers?

imo you're on the right track with Jazz basses, though. i'd suggest looking for an MIJ Fender, those can go below $1k second hand.

i offer different opinion.

as you wont know will you continue with bass (who knows you may find a new love-instrument next time), perhaps a bass starter-pack may be a good option. there are several brands/shops and 2nd-hand choices. a starter-pack includes a relatively low-cost bass and a practise bass-amplifier.

until you are sure you want to progress, and know what tone you are looking for - perhaps then you can start looking at 'branded' or popular makes.

of course, there is no one stopping you spending S$1K on your first bass right?

Swing Jazz Bass - http://www.swingguitars.com/
Ask Standard Value if they got stock. Shd be within your budget and good specs.

Ibanez SR Series Basses - Swee Lee (maybe slightly above $1k)
Squier Vintage Modified

Yamaha BB Series Basses

MTD Basses - Davis

Thanks for all the feedbacks.

@b33r I've $1k budget doesnt mean I have to spend $1k right? Sorry but what does MIJ means? Made In Japan?

@alanchia I get what you mean but I think i will best get something I prefer to something I do not. Not saying that Starter Package ain't good. Hope you can what I mean. I've seen fellow mates here recommending the SX Starter Package (if i am not wrong).

@benjso28 Thanks. How much does Swing cost, average?

The Yamaha BB is under-rated. Though in-expensive, it's quite playable with reasonably good tone. My current bass is the Yamaha BB615.

By the way, I assume the S$1K budget is for the bass guitar only? How about bass-amp?

I defer from the point of the bass starter pack. I personally feel if you want to start anything which requires quite an amount of money to start like photography or bass for your case, always start at mid-range. If you buy cheap stuff you always would have this feeling of it not being enough and there is something lacking from the quality you want. On the other hand, the more expensive the equipment would always leave this sense of regret when you buy it especially when you have only just started out.

Having that said. I personally like hollow body basses. They are bleeding sexy. 1k can probably get you that Epiphone Jack Cassidy bass from Swee Lee i think.

Swing is ard $850 for the Ash body and prob $750 for the Alder body.
Yamaha BB614 is Alder body with 3 band eq. Nice bass though.

Fender MIJ prob ard $1.4k at Ranking depend what model. But I thk the Squier Vintage is worth trying.

SX package ard $250. Upgrade good pickups another 200-300 depend what brand u choose. Alder body i thk.

Maybe u can try the ashdown? see if u like it.
