recommendation for digital piano

Hi guys,

I am beginning to learn piano so am interested to get a digital piano. I would like to ask for recommendation for a good digital piano at a budget of around $1200. I'm able to exceed my budget a bit if there is a good digital piano that falls slightly off my budget. Thanks for the help guys!

What genre are you learning? If classical, then don't for anything other than a real acoustic piano. Anything else and your fingers will never pick up the right technique.

Otherwise, you may want to try out the Yamaha P series. They have pretty good touch, comparing with competitors. Roland FP series are not bad (the newer ones), but you won't find them easily for trying out in Singapore.

I am interested in learning pop/jazz. I have zero knowledge on piano currently, what will be the best way for me to test? And it Seems like yamaha P95 matches my budget.

My personal checklist for a good digital piano has always been the combination of good key touch, good piano sample and a good amplification system.

Given your budget, perhaps start with a test on the Yamaha P155 at its showroom and use that as a benchmark. Don't shun the resale market for a P140 or P120.

Also, Luthermusic has a Yamaha CP33 at a good clearance price, but you'd need to get a few other accessories particularly the stand and speakers. Check out their website. If you are interested, I do have a two tier 'Z' stand, bench and speakers that I no longer need and waiting to sell off.

Happy shopping :-)

The Yamaha CP series is technically not digital pianos but stage pianos. Digital pianos have built in speakers for the purpose of ease of play (like a piano in a living room). Stage pianos are designed to be on stage (hence ergonomic design on sound layering etc) and meant for live playing on stage (hence no built-in speakers, which is not needed on stage).

However, having said that, there is one unusual stage piano that is a hybrid - Yamaha CP300. As Silverbeast said, amplification (built-in speakers) is one of the important factors in your choice. Although I have quite a few qualms with the piano sound of the CP300, the built-in speakers more than compensate for that. Playing on it is a real joy (you just can't stop!). The sound from the speakers add reverberation to the entire unit that you actually feel the sound, not just hear them. Makes playing it very different, and feel like the real thing. But it's beyond your budget...

BTW, cobain, go try out a Yamaha CLP430 at the showroom too and see if you like the playing experience. With the GH3 key action, newer piano sample and good amp, it should not disappoint. But you might need to cough out $2.2k for it and of course, it is not as portable.

On the other hand...which I just recalled..., go try out Kawai series digital pianos at Robert Piano (Centrepoint)...look for Carl who might be able to give you some advice too.

More happy shopping :-)

Hi,

I am thinking of picking up Piano and a digital one seem a good choice for me. Have check up with some shop on the Yamaha P155 and it cost near $2000. Anyone know if it is available at less then $1500 as it seem there was some sale last year and it was at that price. Or, if I were to get from Amazon, anyone can roughly tell me how much it would cost after adding all the shipment fee and 3rd party commission fee? (Amazon dun ship this model to SG so need to go thru 3rd party)

Regards,

The shipping and 7%GST will add a lot in the end if Amazon allow to ship here. Plus you need to take care of the power supply. US is 110Vac 60hz and Singapore is 230Vac 50Hz

Hi,

Thanks for your concern. I guess it will add up to some amount but at 1000USD, I am hoping to find out how much it will cost after adding up all the other charges.
For the power supply, I can simply get one from Sim Lim so that I am not so worry. Also, if I am lucky, there might be a chance that the power adapter is catered for 230V as well. :)

May I check with you if you know where in SG I can find this piano at below $1500 or when is the sale period for Piano in SG?

The best one I find is Sim Lim Square ground floor near the escalator I think. You can see some pro stuff and keyboard just from outside. You can try your luck there.
