Recommendation for 1st Bass

Get the best you can afford. You'll save a ton of money not needing to upgrade so often. Each upgrade will find you out of pocket by anything from $200-$500 a pop...or you'll find yourself with a roomful of bass and gear that you don't use but paid for.
 
Yamaha BB series are good start. Should last for 3-5yrs before u move upwards for better ones.

yeah good one... i've considered upgrading, but i think my yamha bb is already good enough :) i've been actively playing it often for about 3 years now and it's getting more and more comfortable.
 
i think squier are making better basses nowadays. great value especially if the fender tones are your thing
