don't mind a solid state that is sounding close to tube .

I think the Marshall Valvestate is quite close. Comparing it to the tube heads, it's not bad. That's if you like the Marshall sound... Heh.

Otherwise, I think Line6 is a great bet.

nothing beats an ac30. there's one for sale somewhere in the buysell going for quite a good price, you might want to check it out

I find the Valvestate wayyyy too harsh.. The cleans are not so usable.. I mean Clean with a Gain knob?! And not soooo pedal friendly..

And somehow I prefer an AC15 to an AC30.. But both ain't pedal friendly..

Anyways, what is tube sounding siah?
You want the cleans? The break-up? The distortion?
And what's the budget..

One of the best amps I've tried at low price was the Valve Jr.; although it provides only a clean channel, I think it is sufficient..

What kind of tube distortion are you looking for? vintage tweed, marshall brit, modern mesa type etc... Or are you just looking for nice phat tubish creamy cleans on amp for ur pedals?

You got it at the last part!

" Fat tubish creamy cleans.."

Cleans with gain knobs are for higher volume playing. Nice natural crunch... That's how distortion began in the old days. No pedals. They just played loud. I like 'em...

TS asked for Solid State... And you recommend a Tube amp?

he did ask for a TUBE amp OR SS that is TUBISH. hybrids are counted too, no?

TS, i would recommend epi valve jr or blackheart little black giant(or is it black little giant? ok whatever)

if solid state, vox pathfinder? it is economical and has great cleans. i dont know about it being tube sounding.

Burt,

Why don't you just do what I do. Get a clean, neutral sounding SS amp and plug a modeller in. Then you can choose whatever tube sound you want. Problem solved. Unless you're like some of us SOFTies here who have dog ears and can tell that it sounds "very digital lah.." .. then I cant help you .... lah!

ah... yes i sure DONT fall into THAT category. digital? analog? if its nice, who cares a #$^!??

hey softies, thanks for the input.

thought about valve jr & black heart, hybrids are ok too. infact i tried the VOX something something 15 that is quite nice sounding, but it is a modelling amp, which i am not too keen. currently also using a multi efx.

myth or truth, i kinda believe tube amp is high maintenance, i.e. tube rosak, expensive to replace.

budget +-$400.

not urgent la, my Korg is serving me alrite. I pluck it into my vantage practice amp connect to a JBL 10 inch speaker. Works ok. keeping my options open.

whitestrat: naw thats fine. i made mistakes myself.

TS: 400~? hmm...u cant get a valve jr head+cab. maybe the combo version. im not too sure if the blackheart has a combo version. u mean vox avt15(something like that right?). yeah it has built in effects which u wont need since u have ur korg mfx.

personally, my recommendation would be the epi valve jr. though the head+cab version is err...more recommended? its full tube, well cause it only has a power amp tube(right?). doesnt have any preamps. whereas the vox-something is hybrid.
