recommandations on strings

Been using D'addario for a few years, because it's quite cheap compared to other brands. But after I switched to Ernie Ball, I can hear the improvement in my tone and it stays in tune better, been an Ernie Ball user ever since.

But the down side is it oxidise a little faster.

Testing rotosound 0.10, comes with and extra e string.
So far so good.

with similar colour schemes (box) one would've thought the Rotos were head on against Ernie Ball- until one tries them of course...

d'addario XL .095
if any other brand has .095, i'd gladly change to them

Curt Mangan has the .0095 set- have been using them for all my 24.75" scale guitars 8) PM me your address & i'll mail you a complementary set (if you are keen...)

i've pm'ed you :D

does curt mangan strings eat frets? i dun mind tryin 'em out since they cost the same as daddarios. N daddarios do sound a tad ordinary to my ears.

yay i think ill stick to curt mangan. ITS much better than the countless number of other strings ive tried. cheaper too = ).

i dont know, i just like the feeling of those strings. and i think what they wrote on the back kinda got to me too X= very catchy. " its not what we do its what we dont do " i dont understand a word they are saying anyway. now the only thing i dont know if its true is the rust factor. ^^

Hmm.

Sorry to hijack, but where does one get them rotosound electric guitar strings?

And are they / do they have pure nickel-wound sets?

i dont know bout that but can i ask wots the difference in sound between nickel wound and steel wound? sry ah ^^ i really don tknow.

Hmm.

there was a thread about this way back, but I can't recall where it is.

But to summarise the link, apparently wayyy back when people first produced strings they used nickel wraps around the steel-core strings. The nickel wraps allowed for longer life, rounder tone etc etc.

However, with advances in technology (and cost-cutting by string manufacturers) apparently the wraps switched from pure nickel to steel. While steel wraps made the sound very bright, they didn't last long and consumers noticed the difference.

So some string manufacturers tried to have the best of both worlds by having nickel-plated steel wraps, but it was just a thin layer of nickel, so it didn't make much difference.

I've tried a variety of pure nickel-wound sets including Gibsons and GHS, and they're alright. The long-life bit may have been exaggerated because I always wipe my strings down after usage, and I play practically 4/7 days a week for 2 hours.

Currently I'm using Hybrid slinkies.. and although the packaging says "Nickel Wound", I have a feeling that they're nickel-plated steel wraps. The same goes for the Daddario EXL110s which i used to use... but they ate the frets pretty bad.

The steel-wrapped ones are very bright. But they eat frets too. I tried the brightest of the lot.. GHS Super steels.

have been trying the curt mangan nickel wound 10s for the past 4 days.

for the $ i would say its great value altho nothing over the top. i like the fact dat its not coated so u do get some good "steel" tones out of it. The feel of the strings are pretty good in the sense that they dun feel rubbery like daddarios.

Of coz, they are not gonna bend like crazy like daddarios but they not dat stiff at all in my opinion. The daddarios n slinkies do make things easy but if you wan to develop better bending strength you might wana try the mangans. And the mangans bend properly so u can hit your half or full (or more) steps more accurately.

the mangans now count as 1 of my regular strings. well they are cheap n can produce good clean real sounds for the $$. i'm not sure how long they will last. i do change strings regularly ard 3 weeks per set so i'll see how it goes.

I'll still use coated strings but perhaps not dat regularly after the mangans come into the picture.

one thing abt string endorsements (yep.. those artistes you see listed on almost every string website).. i dun really quite believe all the hype n advertisements no more. Most guitarists sound about the same no matter wat string they use. i used to be crazy over ernie balls coz Slash used them. now i say its not wat Slash plays dat matters to me.. its wat i like to play dat matters to me most.

cheers.

Where in Singapore are the GHS Super Steels available? And in what gauge?

Am interested in tryning bright strings.

Currently, am on DR Hi-Beams which Davis brought in again. kudos to them!

Hmm.

The super steels can be bought at Music Plaza in Plaza Singapura. I've only bought the 9s before, but I'm sure 10s are available.

Thanks! will go try them. I'm currently using 10-52, don't think they have that gauge for the GHS SS, i'll check what's available. Thanks for the info!
