It's subjective. the only way is to try it out and see what you like. personally i'm more inclined towards the J for more tonal variation.

so does a p-bass or a jazz bass give a better deeper tone for rock~metal

for this application, you are better off with a humbucking bass, eg:

The P-Bass will give a deeper tone due to its pickup placement which is close to the neck. The P-Bass is known for its low end thump while the Jazz Bazz is known for its mid range growl.

If you noticed that most rock bands with the bassists using a Fender Bass and a pick... they use the P-Bass.

For me I prefer the Jazz Bass for its versatility... but if you go for more lowend sound go for the Precision or the P-Neck J-Bridge combo.

BTW, if you install an onboard preamp or use an outboard preamp... you can tweak your low end and produce a deeper tone.

for a starter bass, I would rather get a 2nd hand bass that sounds and feels a lot better than the brand new starter basses around. Its common, that if you get better.. you would like to upgrade your bass... its only when you realize that tone of bass is not good due to the type of wood used and the pickups installed. IMHO, you get a 2nd hand "better" bass .. it would last longer as you might get more contended with the tone/setup rather than those super entry level basses that uses an ugly wood and crappy pickups... this is just my opinion... its still you who will decide.

good luck bro in getting your bass

got another thing for consider...

body wood got basswood , maple , solid alder, alder what the diff? any pro knows?

G13nn, for the P-Neck J-Bridge combo, what's the benefit with that kind of pickup? Can go jazz and precision at different time is it?

depends on which pickup is dominant in the jazz bass.

the type of wood would influence the bass' inherent tone but this would be subject to the instrument's electronics nature as well.

The Precision pup solo'd has more lowend than the Jazz neck pickup solo'd... it more on the Precision pickup being a humbucker(spit coil)... its also due to its impedance rating that causes it to roll off the high frequencies compared to the original Jazz single coil neck pups.

Yup you can go Jazz by using the Bridge Pup and go Precision by the neck when using 1 pickup at a time.

Having a PJ setup be aware that if you use the Jazz bridge solo or combined with the Precision pup you might hear a hum. But with the Precision pup soloed is quiet. I suggest that you get a humcancelling Jazz bridge like DiMarzio Model J or ultrajazz for the bridge to eliminate the hum. The normal Jazz bass has RW/RP (Reverse Wound/Reverse Polarity) neck pup so when both bridge and neck pickup are combined... the hum cancels out.

Bottom line is... its upto your taste if you prefer the PJ, Precision or Jazz configuration.
