Hi!

I just had a listen to your recording. My first impression is it sounds very nice at the start, I like the free vibrato and warm sound.

It's hard to comment on the middle section though, as the recording is clipping (too loud ). Can you make another recording, maybe singing further away from the mike on the louder notes?

That recording is much easier to hear :) I think you start off very well. I like both your technique and the feeling you're putting into the song. The sound is very free and warm. The area around 0:24 to 0:28 doesn't sound as good, probably because of those lower notes.

The song could use some polishing, but it's already well above the average singer.

hm..

i rating the first song she sing
well firsty her tech, is good but the beat kinda off(even is "free beat" the soul is not there), maybe nervous or something. feeling part she did put a bit there but is not perfect yet
theres room for improvment but above a average singer still not there . vibrato?? well not good enough too. overall is good but still can improve. above average singer?? not yet

*hope doesnt bother you with the comments. but do remenber bad comments allow you to improve and learn."

Thanks for giving details .. I ask because I get frustrated when people say "good" or "bad" without saying why.

I think i differ with you in what I think is good vibrato andy. I think that as long as a voice is free enough to have a "shimmer" in it, that's enough. If the shimmer turns into vibrato then that's fine, but it's the voice being free that is the important part.

There's another person who posted here. He's got a great voice, but he uses a "manufactured" vibrato on the long notes. I would choose no vibrato over a manufactured one. But it seems a wide vibrato is popular in chinese singing.

thanks for all the comments! i accept all the bads and goods! they all make sense to me...i agree that the feeling i put in wasn't enough. too bad imeem cut it off.. cos i thought the 2nd verse i put in more feeling.. as for vibrato.. i never really think much about it when i sing.. it sorta just comes out naturally.. will try to work on it still!

i've never learnt singing.. so i don't really know much about techniques. will continue to try put in more effort.

will also put into the open mic section- thanks for telling me!

thanks again for all the comments! they really help =)

I have to agree with Andy. There's too many 'sh' pronounciation. Sounded kinda funny. She's just an average singer. To get paid singing like that...you might get the opportunity only once. But don't despair, practice and practice again.

HI TS/Vocalist,
The recording is pretty muffered huh.. invest in a cheap usb condenser mic so we can hear the details better? =) The muffer-ness do your diction injustice! So, yeah start saving up! ~ Did you do this recording in a bathroom? Sounds like it~

:) The pitch is great, except a few less accurate intonation.. Another is erm, if I listened correctly, you're "head" (at 00:21) is a little not within control (or perhaps on purpose?). I'm imagining you a pretty good singer~ Show us a better recording sometime! Keep singing!

work hard

remenber when you learn the songs, try to listen to more details. like where is the rest part and how they build up to higher pitch~

oh wow! usb condenser mic. ok! in time to come ;) i'll work harder and save more.
i did the recording in an enclosed room. it sounds echo-y?
do you mean 'head' of state' in punkrock girl? i think i got the tune a bit off.. should be my mistake, yup.
i will bear in mind to pay more attention to the details of the songs, i guess that's also part of the reason why my singing gets a bit boring like in the next verse when it sorta repeats.

thanks for all the encouragement and advice!

another thing that i'd like to ask, is.. i've been pondering for a while, like what kinds of songs i should sing.. i've been told i should sing slow songs, a friend mentioned it because my singing has a lot of vibrato. then i've tried both chinese songs and english songs, from usual pop to rock and slow, but never seem to get a correct direction. any suggestions? or should i try to sing everything? be more versatile?

haha im one of those with a 'shimmer'.. it feels like a half-formed vibrato =\ anyway, what's a 'manufactured' vibrato? sometimes i manipulate my diaphragm to produce some kinda weird sounding vibrato. from leon's blog's mp3s, i deduce it's a vibrato that doesn't sound natural i.e. it doesn't rise and fall naturally with the phrasing of the song? and how does one train to get a vibrato?

I believe that vibrato comes with a free voice. That is, once you've relaxed all the unnecessary muscles around your throat and are just using the inner muscles, the vibrato will suddenly appear. That is certainly my experience. So training to get that vibrato involves relaxing those outer muscles and getting control over the inner ones.

But you can also create other types of vibrato. The diaphragm vibrato is one of them. It does make your voice oscillate, but i don't think it sounds nice. I think that such vibrato techniques originated from people trying to copy the natural vibrato.

There's a classical voice teacher who wrote an article about vibrato. He lists diaphragm vibrato as a "problem", so that makes it clear what he thinks about it :) And he says "In over 25 years of teaching, I have never had a singer in my studio that could not develop healthy vibrato."

well which songs you think you can master well? remenber to focus to a song first. make sure you master everything on ths song. if chinese song i can help that as i more to chinese song~

hmm... i think both were okay... although i don't hear you feeling the song. really being involved in the lyrics and being at the heart of the two songs. your hitting the right pitches which is good. another thing is control of amplitude ey. you should be mindful of how loud you go at certain parts. i don't know whether this analogy will work for you, but i try to imagine my voice round and moving in circular movements, flowing: it helps make sure that the songs i sing all have a certain flow. another thing is, your rhythm. try snapping your fingers to a constant beat when you sing, and groove, really groove.

well that's all really. over all not bad. you just need a little tweaking. i like your timbre. nice nice. :)

do what ever you like really. i think what ever it is, it just takes practice. pick out songs you really like, which inspire you or have some sorta connection. slowly develop your own style and listen to as many bands and types of music as you can. what you want is influence.

:)

you can do it!

:D
