rap

I listen to metal most of the time but I enjoy DJ shadows sometimes... It isn't really rap, more of hip hop. (What's difference anyway?) Really groovy music to chill out to.

Rap is a part of the hip hop culture which includes beat-boxing, DJ-ing, Graffiti, and all that other cool stuff. There are SO many good hip hop groups/lyricists that are not on MTV that you'd be surprised.

Actually got some rap songs are quite meaningful. (Say 'stan' - eminem for example). But damn, lyrics of those bullshit rappers nowadays are really only about women, money, cars and sex. And their vid..Sigh.. I've seen a song called - "This is why i'm hot" << This is the greatest bullshit on earth :

This is why I’m hot(x2)
This is why(x2) uh
This is why I’m hot (uh)
This is why I’m hot(x2) whoo
This is why(x2)
This is why I’m hot

I’m hot coz I’m fly (fly)
You ain’t coz you’re not (mims)
This is why x2
This is why I’m hot(x2

=))

wtf????? lol

i laughed upon seeing the lyrics. Well rap...hmm..i guess the nice ones with meaningful lyrics are worthy to be listened to while those bout sex ganstax are a waste of time. And i cant rap/hiphop songs with voices of babies or chipmunks.

local hip hop scene is great man . from what i know. i went for a few Hip Hop gigs. like Floetry , Magnolius and stuffs. and i totally became inspired by this rapper called " Bless " . he's f*ckin awesome , honestly. his lyrics are worth listening to. and a hip hop group called XS.1 or smth like that. ha. yea.

Slipknot's songs are kinda rap+metal too.

whats uncool is that the local homeboys talk about AK and their HO's. do they really have AK's and HO's?

i like those talking abt AKs and HOs, quite funny.

but finding a good rapper in sg is quite hard, or maybe the scene is so fragmented that the hiphop scene and this local geetar scene don't mix around much.

i'm looking for a rapper!!

sheikh haikel, the first person that looks most like a sg rapper that comes to my mind

To me being a rapper has alot of advantage and can be a good musician/lyricist. Imagine u writing a song, u will need a chord progression so u can create a melody, try creating a melody with a drumbeat! Rappers do that and they do that well, so i have some respect there. U can give them any stupid beat and they can come out with something decent.
PS Im not a rapper. Im a metalhead!!

It's DJ Shadow, dude.

Actually, it depends on which album of his you listen to. The 1st 2 are more ambient/ experimental (hey, it was damn cutting-edge for its time) hip-hop: the 1st being more organic. He did everything on an Akai sampler. Bastard! The 2nd being slightly more electro and New Wave. Still good. The most recent one is more mainstream with collaborations with more rappers. I donch rikes so much. Tracks are not that good.

He did the 1st UNKLE album with a slew of guest artists from Thom Yorke (Radiohead) to Richard Ashcroft (The Verve) to Mike D (Beastie Boys) and Jason Newstead (yes, that dude!). Fucken excellent album. You should check that out...

All this talk about dissing rappers about their blings blings and their subject matter applies to most musical genres...

I mean, these rappers will look at the emo kids and go like "Yo, only 'em bitches wear 'em MAC make-up and eyeliners." or look at the black metal scene and go, "Wassup with the chains and collar spikes, dawg? Tryin' to look like one?"

Every music subculture has its certain image and accessories which its own following identifies it by. And quite a fair bit of people follow a certain music genre due to the fashion statement it makes. Even the hardcore scene does in a certain way with those 'X' marked across their hands. It's called branding...

Rap/ hip-hop started back in the 70's with a stronger socio-political message in the Bronx. If you are really interested in that, please Wikipedia it. And hip-hop production is fucken amazing. I love it. The amount of layers in the music is sometimes more than a boring rock tune.

IMO, local rap is ok if local rappers don't go faking ghetto (ie. black) slangs, languages, gestures and their entire yo-yo-yos.....something that's so unnatural to them (and to the listeners too). A little copying is ok, but in moderation lah. ;)

But on the other extreme, local rappers should NEVER EVER emulate the rap below. If you're anorexic and want to throw up your breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once, then you may listen to this (urgh!).....
