subversion u are right in a sense that saying 'to each his own' (paraphrased)
however i wouldnt say its personal philosophy. in general tubes are warmer sounding. and cleans tones are alot clearer, rounder and fuller. the type of tubes and speakers (one of the most important factor of amps) would then determine clarity, not really just because its Solid state.
I dont wanna mention about much gain/distortion because i do think that solid state gain/distortion is better in many ways for heavier sounds of rock and metal. but for a blues type or crunch/overdrive, tube amps seem to do more wonders.
but in the end, the sound thats produced by the amp is heard in different ways for different people. so i once again agree that 'To Each His Own'
