Question regarding recording of singing.

When I'm recording a cover of a song, it sounds alright "live" aka through my ears directly, but after listening to the recording, my voice sounds very nasal and different from when I'm singing it. Is it just me or is it the problem with the equipment I use for recording; eg. without proper mike, the black circle thing that should be in between the mike and me or something? I used a macbook for recording.

it's biology. the voice you hear and the voice other people hear is totally different. It's a matter of what medium the vibrations go through to your inner ears. that being said your mic is very important. you should get a good USB mic if you're serious about it.

if you want to do serious recording you'd also need a good audio interface and monitoring equipment.

When my voice was nasal, it was the same. I was so used to the nasality that I didn't hear it unless I listened to a recording. If you really want to convince yourself, try recording just once with a better mic. But be warned that if you use a better mic, more flaws in your singing will be exposed :) But at least you will have a clear idea of what needs work.
