push pull coil splits.. out of phase switches?

Hey guys.. i'm getting a new guitar with a H-H configuration soon and i was looking to mod it to get more generic sounds out of it.
I've always heard and read of push pull pots for coil splits and out of phase switches but do these require some extensive and expensive work? Also.. talking about out of phase. This is generally the sound for strats in the 2nd/4th position right?

And if i want to do this together with swapping of the stock pickups on this new guitar.. where's a good place that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance.

it's not very extensive work depending on how u wire. expensive? maybe. a push-pull pot sells at 15-20 at davis if memory serves me. u will also have to check if there's enough room to fit a push-pull pot (usually there is.)

the term "out of phase" is a misnomer, but yes, it's referred to that way because of the similarity of the sound in the 2nd and 4th position with general out of phase PUs.

different brand PUs have different wiring and stuff thou. For example, Dimarzio Humbuckers usually employ a 4-wire config.

if you're intending to undertake this, even before sending it to someone to mod, i think you should read up on the various options.

1) Grab a copy of Do-It-Yourself Projects for Guitarists from the national library.

2) Look through the documents/specs of the pickups you are upgrading to.
probably you'd be interested in these main two:

3) Decide and plan out a rough idea of how you want to rewire.

4) Either be adventurous and DIY, or bring it to a pro to do it.

Happy modding. :D
