prractice routine

ah yes yes! swiss army triplets! ... gonna add blushda's soon if i can get down the swiss army triplets down decently at a faster tempo...

swiss army triplets hmm.. sorry abit off topic but,

what are swiss triplets?
i used to think swiss triplets were rrL rrL rrL or llR llR llR
then i saw Derrick Pope's video and he said that when you play swiss triplets and you take out each hand, you get doubles.
so is it like a combination of doubles to get triplets?
or is it triplets while playing doubles: RrlLrrLlrRllR

triplet done by a guy from switzerland. i'm pretty sure thts wat it is. right ? right?
stupidity aside, its just like a flam tap to the best of my knowledge. not really impt to know, as long as u can do a flam followed by something u shld be gold.

I practice minimum 2 hours a day, usually 3 hours, 6 times a week. REASON - I'm old liao mah, not much time left, unlike you young drummers here.

My practice on Mon, Wed, Thur, Fri - incorporates

( 1 ) My weekly homework given by my Instructor eg. Strokes, Rythmn Patterns - probably 1/2 an hour to 1hr on this

( 2 ) The rest of the time - on Rudiments - Single, Double (using pull-out Techniques), Paradiddles, Roll-Groups, Ruff-Groups, Flam-Groups. Accenting 16th Notes, Triplets etc.

PS; - Actually it is not the numbers of hours put into practice (not that it's not important - of course it is), but most importantly practicing it correctly using the right techniques in drumming. Through time, practicing through the right techniques - we develop Good Dynamics & Musicality in Drumming - then Speed - all these takes years & years of development - Drumming is Hard To Master but Easy To Play.

I'm quite Technical into Drumming, cause my Instructor train me up to be like this - He had shown me that with proper practice & techniques - Drumming Grooves...It all about the Sound we are able to create from our drumming.

Every Tuesday - I go for jamming 3 hours non-stop with a band - this is also a form of practice in drumming.

Every Saturday - My Drumming Lesson in the afternoon.

Sunday - All work & no play makes Jack a dull boy - so I have to relax myself

crap thts a hectic shedule dude. i wish i had the discipline to do tht right now in the hols, gods knows i need it!. thanks for the advice on splitting up the prac time thats wat alot of the gd drummers do i find.
if i may be bold and offer a tip, do reading excercises as well, i found out the hard way my technicality didn't mean a thing when i cldn't read a chart while playing with a band.
thanks for the gd advice

Bro blured...Chart Reading here I believed you mean Sheet _Music Reading, is really not so important unless - you are playing in an Orchestra (Very Very Important NOte-By Note, no one note less, no one note more - eg Singapore Symphony Orchestra or a Big Band (I believed).

But generally, one need not be extremely good in Sheet-Music Reading, beacuse Sheet Music Reading is not really that difficult through practicing......but I think Experience In Drumming is...cause you know when they come to those "Hockey Sticks Things"...you just know what to do...

I conclude Sheet-Music Reading is not MOst Important (Important yes - for as Drummers to be term a Musician)......It's Practice that is important..to Groove

hi rudibro :D

my take is that it really depends on the drummer, for many drummers in sg who want to reach a certain standard at the professional level, being able to play a piece of music from music sheet is a must.

this is because there are times you get the call to play at a gig, at there is always a chance there will be songs that you have not heard before.

of course, other things are also crucial ie. you must be able to 'groove', keep time, etc. etc.

cheers!

yup never leave out your ability to read music. it'll boost your chances of getting a musical job or bands, if you can read. playing and reading are both essential

rudimental drummer,
ermmmm okie i have to disagree with u there, there are alot of bands who are at a certain level tht will require u to read, not only the sym stuff.
and no its called chart reading, tell u wat call it anything u want, i dun wanna sound like a picky ass :) . its cool man dun learn how to read, more gigs for those who can

I do agree and I did mentioned that "Reading is important"....but really I don't really see many Drummers reading "Chart-Reading" when they play...besides those playing in the Orchestra & Big-Band.

In Thompson CC, where the Big-Bands is, the Drummer does read Chart....In a club, or in a show eg....I saw those Professional Drummers eg. Tama Goh, Jimmy Lee playing - they don't read a chart in front of them...though I know these drummers can read very very well...but maybe it's not necessary at that time...

So I'm just saying Reading is important of course without doubt, and every Drummer must be able to learn to read if possibly well (cause Drummers are indeed Musician too)..but Chart-Reading is not the most important here that's all but playing...because I perceived we seldom have the chance to read Chart-Music and play along...unless we aspire to be like those Professional Drummers.

PS; Bro blurred..actually you are not blurred what Hehehehe...how come choose a nick like that...Cheers !

they maybe dont need to read all the way their playing but with chart/notes aside, they can refer them as their guide to certain parts.

Ainol, John Thomas, Jimmy (Tempered Mental), Sotong, Zahid Ahmad, Gary Gideon, just to name afew. And they are all can be considered as "best drummer"

I thought John Thomas was one of the 2 top there.
