Producing and Directing Music Videos

IT can be.. just need the creativity thats all.. dont have to go all expensive for more then $1k to have an awesome music video bud..

Yea man i totally understand wad ur trying to say...n one more time im gonna say this is that i've got nuthing against u or ur idea of the MTV....the post that was harsh from me before was'nt targeted at u i hope u understand :)

Mortichro, since you are still in school, one way is to use the equipment there to do a school project - a local band mtv.

This way, you complete your project, score points, band get mtv done and your dream come true!

it is very good to start early. Start small first and don't think about money. Even "shoestring" music videos can cost a lot more than just 1-2k.

A tip, if you are a student and study in FSV, Ngee Ann or who have friends who do, you actually have access to equipment that the rest of us who have to fork out a lot of money for.

You also have student rates when it comes to post such as telecine if you even intend to shoot on 16mm. ( Up to 50% off)

If I were you, I would leverage that.

Another advice, don't just post a thread like this and expect good bands to come forth and offer to "buy" your services, if you are just starting out, and this is all indie, why don;t you start by approaching bands you know as friends, would make it a lot easier for you to do what you want to do too even if you do not have a proper reel yet.

Im getting pissed on my own free time n i dun see what has getting pissed gotta do with improving music....and most of all i guess i dun need anyone to tell me to not waste time n improve on my music....ok i guess we should stop this arguement anyway....but wadever it is if u dun like my attitude or wad in anyway i apologize too

My, my..

You are a sensitive soul...

i post this for opinions not for services... i want to know how much bands would want to do a music video and able to fork out some amount of money. I just want to know, im not planning to get started straight away. If i have my own money i would sacrifice it for the sake of that band for because i myself would love to see my work being showcased to anyone.

like i said earlier it is not easy to get clearance for school equipment from my department head sometimes.. i have to suck it up to them to get clearance. (because im from lasalle and they have limited number of cameras) And also.. rentals have better equipments with better lens adapter for cameras.

OK la.. you can have zero budgeting to make your own music video.. but i would say Quality is better than Quantity at this part.

haha bro, i am just curious... what camera could you loan out to do personal stuff from lasalle? maybe if you shot in HD instead it COULD be cheaper... sorry cause for us like only HD available no film :/

lol we have the Canon XL H1 and a panasonic VariCam which is good.. and in HD and it runs in 24 frames per second which will make the video look like your typical channel 8 dramas. but to me... if the camera has like a stock lens or letus adapter it could make that film look which it would be much much much better. Well ok la the Varicam gives more quality for a music video but heh we only have one in our school lol..

Although I have been shooting video for quite a while, i never made any nice nice clip. Haiz.... what to do? Hand-to-mouth.

But i definitely love watching how others does it.

They are using Canon HV20 / HV30 that cost less than $2k. So tempted to get one and make arty films.

cool cool. haha i'd love to be allowed to use the varicam or the canon... will only be allowed to use sony xdcams next year onwards, kinda sucky. haha

anyway the camera is important, but i feel post-prod is where you can really do lots of tricks to make it look artsier? and the key's really in good shot blocking and location, i feel those do half the work for you, even using a consumer camcorder... of course the editing software got to be good, like FCP or premiere, but i prefer vegas.. haha... i did this on vegas, granted it was using a panasonic p2 but we could only shoot in DV, so most of the rest are done in post :/

well then you got your answer dun you? why dun you look at the tips I posted. It s interesting to see if you are looking to help bands or just showcase yourself. Either way, if its your friends' bands as I suggested, it would be a lot easier won't it?

Directing a video/ film takes time, don't expect anything overnight.

James, you shoot videos? Never seen any of them in the industry.

Hi Ken

Mine are those low budget ones. Make enough to survive type. Ha..ha...

The other day I gatecrashed Ngee Ann's FSV 15th anniversary party at St James, I know like only 5 people among the 'industry'. Ha..ha...

Low profile, low profile..... (quickly hide behind the reflector).

dood!?? u were in fly by night!??? i participated too!! if u remember Fly back to me, honey bee (the one with the korean guy and chinese girl) group 41, thats my group.. i was the DOP for that group. Havent uploaded the video yet coz my grp leader didnt want to. I remember yours lol...

hey there Mortichro,

its great to see you have the interest of doing music videos and local bands... welcome to the force !!!

my take is... you'll have to let your passion drive you into the stratosphere of no return.

it goes beyond budget, equipment constraint. you must develop a vision of yourself and what you want to be, build up tools to express yourself and have the drive (and desperation) to see through what you want out of life.

once you get this going, you'll find goals like getting bands to work with, are just part of the journey.

for example, i am a huge fan of monty python. check out them clips on youtube ! the budget is ridiculously.. low ! ... the writing, directing is equally astonishing. i think these guys remembered in history all-time for their contributions to comedy.. most of it created from ... shoestring budget  (brilliant ideas come mostly from brain... which is free.. u get it when u born)

the guys are now really old... they serve as professor in university, 1 or 2 of guys got award from the queen.. u get the drift.. they made it without having harvard degree or elite family background

so, hope you get kickstarted somewhere somehow and look forward to seeing you kicka** work !!

cheers

ps. my brother ken here is a director/producer and can give u valuable advice if u buy him beer... (maybe even a job) hahaha, u'll need to suss out his drinking lair though...
