Problem with A String

Lately i've been having problem with the A string.
On my electrionic tuner, it says its tuned.
But when i use the relative tuning method and ear method.
A really sounds off lay.
What is wrong with it? It the pickup dead?
The rest of the strings are ok tho?
Help..

By relative tuning method, I assume you mean fretting on the 5th?
If so, it might be you have a problem with proper fretting technique. Are you bending the string as you fret?

But more likely, it's a case of bad intonation. Check by playing a harmonic on the 12th, see what the tuner registers, then play a fretted 12th. It should read exactly the same note. If not, you have an intonation problem.

You might also want to try tuning by harmonics (when you don't have a tuner). I find it much easier to use harmonics. Let ring the harmonics: 5th on E and 7th on A. Listen out for "vibrations", which indicate your tuning is off.

Hope this helps

Intonation problem go to music vendor fix or can i just take a screw driver and try tweaking it seesee.

Tweak the saddle right? The metal area right at the bottom?

the bigger screws at the end of the bridge.. you're basically adjusting the scale length. the smaller screws on the saddles are for string action

I just bought this bass guitar yesterday ; used condition.
Sigh...this has to happen.
Really confusing for a nOObie.

hey dude, chanced upon this thread, dun feel upset man. Take it as a good chance to adjust your own bass intonations. Useful things to learn to help you maintain your own gear and save money on small maintenance issues.

Cheers!
