portable electronic drums

i won't recommend.. the feel on that digital drums just suck and the sound quality just cannot make it. of cos for that price, nobody can complain bout the portabilty of it but i think u can spend ur money better on something else.
i would recommend rythm roach by roland or u get a remo practice pad with a metronome. a cheaper alternative would be to use an online mentronome.

anyway, ur fren needs to bring the kit to? u said ur fren is thinking of getting a portable drumset..

hope it helps

erm he plans to bring it to other friends' houses.

whats a rhythnm roach?

Anyway he's on a pretty tight budget like 300 bucks.

i guess ur fren is bringing that for jamming?
it's quite a novelty idea.. but i won't recommend the portable drums u referring. tried it in yamaha.. totally hate it! the pads are just too small for me. terok.
regarding the rythm coach, u can go www.rolandus.com for a better idea of what it is and how it works. i'll just roughly give u an idea or what is yah?

it's actually a electronic pad with mesh heads... and it's has a "brain" inside.. i'm not too sure of the price.. there are limited sounds u can get from this cheap brain of cos... but the most basic sounds u can get is snare and bass drum sounds. then there's a metronome inside.. rythm coach is basically like a tempo inspector or a something which helps to improve ur rythm.
u on the metronome and u play with the metronome.. rythm roach tells u whether u are faster or slower than the tempo. that's the main highlight of it i guess. i think it's a good tool for improving. because u mentioned ur fren wanted something to improve. i think that will help alot in speed, training of rudiments and stuff.

i was just thinking to myself.. ur fren suggested that yamaha digital portable kit cos it has alot more pads, thus a full drumset is in there and it's relatively cheap. but imho, it's really not good for improving.

my 2 cents.

i agree with lepids.. used dat once when we jammed at a frens place, when with acoustic guitars for songwritning and getting ideas in place seems ok... but in the long run u will want to sell it off.
den again wat is yer purpose?
jamming/songwriting/practice?

I think one bad thing about it is also it can't really play simutaneously very well as in it can only play one sound at a time. A friend of mine got a similar model and it was still ok until parts when the drum got a bit complicated and the machine only managed to play half of the sounds cos it cannot keep up. i myslef am looking into a portable drum... i saw before this drum keyboard. its slightly smaller than 1/3 a normal computer keyboard. Although its not like actually playing, but i think it can definately keep up what we want. i'll try to find a pic to show u all

Comments anyone?

would love to see it!! if it's not from roland or yamaha, i mos prolly won't have heard of it! so will be interested!

because i'm bending towards an electronic kit/muted acoustic kits unless there's a better solution.. :D

if u guys want to venture further into the edrumming community.. check dis site out
http://edrum.for.free.fr/
some interesting diy projects, which may require some drum module from alesis/ddrum/roland/yamaha. (if u need to spend lotsa cash, spend it on the modules) the rest can be made quite cheap.
there is also an info to make ye own module
http://www.pjrc.com/tech/midi-drums/drum-intro.html
http://www.midibox.org/edrum/

might be worth the trouble, effort and money. instead of a keyboard or yamaha dd somthin. ive also used a keayboard drums before. and it sucks...
if ure budget is really tight and u have no idea wat i juz posted the links to.... then try zoom rhythmtracks.. or other drum machiones. might still not be like playing an actual kit. but at least it sounds betta. and can be sold off reasonably at the 2nd hand market.
juz my 2 cents...
hope it helps somewhat

thanks input,
i've read those sites before liao.. looking for something good and cheap. i know what u mean.. i might venture into the diy stuff if i have the time. i've read and seen clips of this guy using a hart module with his "pearl rythm-converted-to-ekit!" yah, sounds cool. stilll thinking.. no time now lah.. but if given an ekit now, i won't complain! :P

but no TD-3!! it sucks totally..

hart doesnt make modules... the make triggers... heheh
i converted my pacific chameleon with an alesis dm5 and roland td5... sold everythin and got a old blue td6 v club kit...
all i have to do now is look for a cheap snare and convert it again... hehe.

anyway.. utried the td3? wats so bad abt it.. its one of the latest modules from roland.
do share

huh?! i thought there's hart modules.. thought i saw it somewhere. nvm, i may be wrong.

my 2 cents on the TD3..

i've tried a few kinds of ekits before.. like the DTxtreme, DTxpress by yamahas. and the TD8 also.

DTxtreme, i quite like the feel of the drums. it's just like real.. not much of a difference compared to an acoustic kits in terms of feel. but the sound module to me is not as good as the roland TD8. other than that, it's just good for its price! my fren bought it for $2500. second hand. (it was retailing at $5k+) it makes use of real skins if i'm not wrong. my fren told me that it's possible to change the heads of the drums. (since the heads can be changed, it means that u can adjust the tension of the drums to ur liking. possible)

now comparing the DTxpress and TD3 side by side.
no doubt the TD3 has its plus points like rythm roach, but the sound module is just so terrible. personally, i don't like the sounds in the module.(i know for its price, u can't really complain) it's abit dead in terms of quality. whereas the DTxpress sounds more lively and the sound of the drums are just more "oophm"!!
just giving a slight comparison.

back to what i thought of the TD3. tried it at swee lee at 630pm(they close at 7pm). so kalai, the drummer in swee lee just turned on the machine and let me have a try cos i told him that i've thought of buying either a td3 or td6 or td 8, depending on the budget.. so he did a demo for me..
1.sounds unreal.
2. i'm not a big fan of rubber pads. so that makes a - point for me. some of u guys might like it.
3. there's rythm roach. good for practising!
4. 4 piece kit. u can add on if u want. but it means more money!
5. very few sounds. pay about 1k+ more? and get a TD6! :D
6. just hate the interface!! fewer buttons means more trouble in adjusting the settings like volume.

there's are some good things and bad things bout the TD3. makes a good practice pad of cos! but all means, it's more than a practice pad. but then again, why not the TD6?

IMHO, if i were given a choice between DTxpress and TD3, i'll go for the Dtxpress. module is better and it's more worth it i feel.
but i support roland still. :P like their TD8 and Td20!! :P td8 is just amazing man!!! it's 5k plus for those who wants to know the price!

hope it helps yeah?! :D

hart makes the kit. triggers/rack/stands. like pintech. too bad cant get it here in sg.
anyway.. does the dtxtreme use regular mylar heads or mesh heads? i agree abt mesh heads as opposed to gum rubber pads. not god for yer arms. my most realistic upgrade for module is the td8 now.. has same sounds on td6 but much more tweakable. have resisted tryin the new kits at swee lee... scared if i tried sumthin and liked it.. im gonna go home with more things in hand and less things in wallet.
wats yer kit now anyway/
acoustic or electroniic?

Easily said....... tell your friend not to waste his time or money on the electronic drum.....

he has a budget of 300...... right.... tried to hold on a little more and bring it up to about 1000++ and he might get a real drum kit.... and don't waste your time jamming with the electronic drum kits the ones that your thinking of buying really sucks...... as most previous reply have stated it's trigger such.....

i used to have one and before a year it eventually failed on me..... not a gd idea to have one of those portable e-drums....

thrust me.....

and regarding skills, i suggest you guys to start jamming in studios.....
you guys would build up your skills there.... nothing beats a real drum kit......

of cos nothing beats the real thing.

of cos an ekit will be more appropriate for HDB flats yah? i'm still in the midst of considering.:D

it's either TD6 or TD8 or acoustic kit replaced with mesh heads..

yah.. let my budget speak for itself lor.. :P
anyway, just drum on man!! i find that a practice pad will be most wise now if u are looking for something to practise on. only 25 bucks and u can practise ur rudiments and stick control!!! 25 bucks won't hurt ur 1000 dollars budget or what right?

that's what i'm doing. i got myself remo practice pad and meanwhile saving up for a practice kit. :D it's better than having nothing and still fretting over which to buy yeah!!

anyway, budget of 300 bucks is just way impossible to get a DECENT portable drum kit lah.. IMO..

input_output: heh, i may be wrong on this. i thought i saw pintech in parklane..i could be wrong.. but i definitely saw DDRUMS!! u might want to go check it out! :D
regarding that DTxtreme, it's not mesh heads for sure! and it's not gum rubber either. i dun exactly know what is the mylar u are referring.. it could be that. the heads' tension could be adjusted and changed. just like the acoustic kit heads! :D anyway, it's discontinued!

drum on brudders!

yep nuthin beats the real thing... but after playing my ekit for abt 6 mths.. it feels diff and LOUD on an a kit. heheh.
i picked up a used 14" sonor steel snare earlier.. rusted like hell.. thrown out by a resident here.. will be converting it to esnare soon.
yup parklane has some pintechs and a ddrum.. tried out the ddrum snare.. impressive.. but also very expensive..
the reason i got an electric kit is solely becaus of HDB. i play till 11pm at nite and still no knocks on my door.
lepids.. good luck on yer savings, its worth it.. heheh.
