I think most polytechnics, or any institutions per se have such silly unwritten policies about how heavy is heavy music during their gigs. I've had my share of having to go through panels of judges NOT to judge on our playing but to judge on how heavy our music is.
At the same time, I've covered Trivium and Muse and attended gigs playing Canon Rock and Master of Puppets in poly.
I realized what made the difference between a needlessly strict organizer and a good one are usually these criteria:
-Any Guest of Honor from the staff? (principal, director, etc)
-Any external party? (charity concert benefactor, parents, etc)
-Overly anti-rock CCA Officers
Maybe you might wanna chat up with the organizer and find out more about the gig then choose your songs.
Of course, when you play it for the panel of judges, go easy on the distortion and screaming and falsetto. Think, "Make this Mandopop". Youtube a Jay Chou music video or something. No offence to Mandopop and Jay Chou fans, but the panel of judges are USUALLY mandopop fans who have no idea who Steve Vai or Matt Bellamy is. Give something they like, plus points on your band. Once you're in, keep the act up.
Now, for the big day, who will stop you if you go all Spinal Tap and push all the knobs to 11 and cascaded 50 distortion pedals? As long as you don't blow up the amps, you're safe. Just that maybe, just maybe, they blacklist you from school gigs, but it's unlikely.
