Playing the guitar without the "twang".

Its called a volume swell, he's hammering on the string with the volume down, and then turning the volume up while the string is still vibrating. Thats why you don't hear the attack at first.. You'll prob have to turn the amp up a bit more if you wanna get a consistent sound from the volume swells

Hi, Does anyone have tips on how to do the above? the sound is smooth and no twang at all. don't know other ways to describe it.

Jeff beck does that very extensively. 2 examples are below:

1) Drown in my own tears: the opening few notes, and some other parts.

2) Somewhere over the Rainbow: Quite a lot of times.

Any help? Me trying to copy my favourite guitarist :) thanks

A very common reason why people get perceived 'twang' is strings, use a thicker gauge....

Other reasons - your picking dynamics....trying different ways to pick and see if u can pick smoothly...use a light grip on ur pick....

You might wanna try a more compressed pedal? not really the most ideal way...but it will help...say a tubescreamer clone..

and oh..get a compressor.....a mild one..i like goose's citrus...

another reason maybe due to jeff becks is using his fingers? especially wifout nails, ur guitar wun twang much.. learn to play abit of classical guitar...ur thumb plays the last 3 strings n ur index n middle n ring plays the 3rd, 2nd and 1st string respectively or just for the first 3 strings use ur index n middle...sounds different from using picks...

Yo thanks a lot for yo advice(s). Will work on it! Yea I notice his fingers keeps turning the volume knob when doing the swell. Thanks!

can be kinda troublesome(and accident prone) doing swells with the volume knob. i think a volume pedal would be good if you could afford one
good luck

Yea i know pple like steve vai use volume pedals. but i just wanna copy jeff beck so...... ha. Cos I like the fact he don't use pedals and fanciful gadgets. thanks for the advice anyway.
