Hi guys, I'm a left handed drummer on a right handed drum kit. Just want to know who else play this way and what should we do..

you need to play on a right handed kit? just move the hi hat to the otherside and reverse the whole thing la. unless you wanna play open handedly.

i was taught to play open handedly by a right handed drummer. is it possible for me to go on learning this way? i'm all jumble up. im used to kicking with my right foot(unless im double pedalling) and i start my paradiddle with right hand. is it alright? can i go on like this? is it advisible?

IMO its possible, to play open handed with a right-handed kit set up, just that when u do fills, or rudiments, roll etc, do it in LRLR instead.

However there are some cons if u really wan to paly it the right handed setup kit way, like u cant hit 8 notes on the floor tom and u also ned to reposition yur ride.

Its quite recommended that u try to paly the right handed way, IMO drums doesnt really have right handed or left handed, its just that wheat u begins to paly with as a beginner till now, u r just more used to that way of playing.

Hope this helps

think of it this way. if a band leader or someone ask you not to play open handedly and go back to the right over left, in your case, left over right style. and you go huh??? what would he think. better to learn both ways if as playing open handedly is also very important.

caijunlong: before u ever think of switching to normal right handed or switching all your kit to right, pls go to youtube and watch few videos of Carter Beauford Under The Table and Dreaming. He plays open handed and its freakin amazing what he can do with it. You are very lucky that you are taught to play open handed. I myself tried to play open handed sometimes. It'll give our 4 limbs more independent. Lucky you!!!

its not a thing of switching. its a thing of having the best of both worlds. guess what any teacher would teach you on your first drumset lesson? how to play the common way, and of course he'll advise you to keep practicing your open handed drumming.

yeah ure kinda rite. but really, if my teacher would teach me to play open handed at our very first lesson, i am very glad to learn it.

it doesnt really matter right or left handed la...whats most important is...you are comfortable with it...

and drumming....most of us are trying to be ambidextrous...perhaps if ur a leftie and play a right handed style....u'll achieve this faster?i dunno...and yeah carter is a monster...

hey man, having a strong left hand is a real advantage to you, so i suggest you play cross sticking first... learn to lead with your right hand and play right hand drumset...

then after that, train open handed playing...

if you want inspiration, check out Carter Beauford...

you got a great advantage man :) pls use it :) we are all excited to see you become super or something:)

Yes, I saw a number of experienced left handed drummers playing LRLR instead of RLRL. But I learn RLRL. I move my ride in between my hi hat and left tom(find a place to squeeze it some where there). Although I can play eight notes on the floor tom, it's a little off timing so i thought of placing another floor tom beside the hi hat. Then when I try to imagine, almost everything is on the right. even china. so that troubles me. Where to find the space?

open handed is fantastic, if not amazing. you've got an advantage in playing open handed being a left hander. most of us rightys have to switch back to the right over left style of playing (except carter beauford, he's ambidexterous lol), because our master hand is STILL our right hand, so there's only so much we can play open handed, especially fast 16ths on the hihat.

well if i were you, i'd carry on LEADING with my left hand. the reason is very simple. you could always switch your hihat stand over to your right side and convert your kit to a left handed kit, though you may have to work on ur left leg kicking a little. another alternative would be to stick to open handed playing, but throw in a pair of aux hats on your right side so u still can play left over right.

hope i make sense haha.

yes, you're right. my left leg does give me a headache when i try to play left handed way. and my double pedals is meant for right handed drummer. so kind of no point to switch it.
