Hi guys

Just curious to find out if u guys play music as a hobby(meaning play by urself in ur own free time or play in bands just for fun n enjoyment) or seriously (meaning playing in a band, perform gigs, release album etc)?

: )

Whatever makes you happy! ..........Just do it!

Hobbyist = doing it for a hobby.

Serious hobbyist = Spends more time than the average hobbyist. Into it very intensely (be it playing, effects, tone etc).

Professional = doing it for their bread and butter, beer, wine and whiskey....

As serious as getting to Jam in a Blues Pub or watching a good Martin Taylor Concert .... at the end of the day, it's all about bread and butter ....

can music upkeep your lifestyle? Do you intend to stay single or married? How big a flat you want? How big a car you want?

It's up to individual .... there are failures as well as successes in this country ... as what beefy says ... as long as it makes you happy ...

a mixture of both...

my advice: KEEP a steady day job and play at night ..... music line no cpf, no benefits and no stability

That's sound advice for its not advice for everyone. Artistic pursuits like many pursuits will be left stranded if the question of stability is always brought up. Just like starting your own business, there has to be some risk. No cpf , no benefits etc. But there are opportunities to go far. Anything you do, as long as you recognise your limitations and strengths, will enable you to make 'right' decisions.

And if you know you are on top of your game, there's never a need to worry. Look at our reknowned musicians, Iskandar Ismail, joshua wan etc. They are doing music full time and doing better than most graduates I would add.

If I ever get to be successful in music, then its a serious thing. If i dont get to be successful then it stays as a serious hobby. Hee :)

We would all love to earn money doing something we love to do: playing music, but it isn't possible for everybody with aspirations to achieve them, eh.

Music, as a performing art, is not something you can force success in.. and we all don't want to come to a point where we have to start selling our guitars and gears just for food, ya know.

jus like wat suspend_thought said...even we all haf this passion on makin music our living..its nt like every single one of us can make it...but at least try it before giving up...u nv know wat u can achieve unless u try..
