Hey everyone. Can everyone kindly place you precious vote on:

1) Which is the/your best/fav. Sound Module and Software Seqencer for doing Film Scoring work??

2) Which is the/your best/fav. Synthesizer and Softsynth for doing Sound Design for film work??

Thank you very much.

instead of saying which is best, i would state my basic requirements.

1. sync to vtp or has support for video playback built in.
2. timecode
3. stretch time

as for sound, everything i can get my hands on. more sound, more inspiration.

haha. Thanks. Actually i'm in to sound for picture. But just wondering which would be the best to get. I'm thinking getting a sound module that is suitable for doing Film Scoring..and a synthesizer that is suitable or designed to do sound design work.

I've heard a Synclavier X or Native Instruments Absynth 3, REAKTOR 5 is good for sound design.
And Gigastudio is designed for doing Film Scoring work. Duno which sound module is best for Film Scoring.

Any recomendations??

1. Best sound module - none. All of them will never measure up to softsamples. Sequencer - doesn't really matter. All depends on personal preference, workflow, and OS.

2. Best synth for film-music - none. Best softssynth - all depends on the type of film music. Most of them focusses on electronic music and are used to layer or give background sounds (supportive). But softsynths must be differentiated from softsamplers as discussed before in another thead in the past. Softsamplers are the mainstay for film music - and it will always be the case in the future!

And there will be no "best" softsampler or library. People into film music will agree with this - we mix and match sounds from various libraries to create a certain atmosphere or effect. Each one has it's own strengths and weaknesses. I would choose a library based on it's strength - this will be the main "core". Then the weaknesses of the library will be offset by adding on other libraries - not as a whole but as sections. If the core library is weak in woodwinds, we get a woodwind section from another library that is famous for the woodwinds etc.

And lastly, I think this thread is in the wrong forum... should be under the software section, no?

If you're already using Gigastudio, why are you going back into modules?? It's taking a step backwards! I'm using Gigastudio - the day since I've started using it (since version 1), I've sold all my hardware modules and never turned back!

sorry. I dun really know much about giga studio. I've always thought that it's just another sequencer like Cubase. So from what you say, I presume it comes with sound library as well?? So do you have any idea where to get Gigastudio in Singapore?? Or any showroom for me to actually try it out first??

Oh, I assume you owned it. Sorry, I misunderstood your previous post.

Softsamplers do not come with samples loaded - althought they do have demo versions when you buy them. These versions are watered down versions of larger libraries. There are literary hudreds of sample libraries out there. Softsampler is now the main stay of film music writing.

There are a number of softsamaplers - Gigastudio, GVI (the newer Gigastudio virtual instrument that just came out - which now lets GS integrate as a VST plug-in), Kontakt, EXS, Samplecell, and many thid party stand-alone libraries that uses their own engines.

You can download a demo version of Kontakt. But you'll need sample libraries to play around with. If you haven't heard any softsamplers, do a search on Tascam Gigastudio and East West for starters - and check out in their demos. Or, you can listen to SOFTie tera's music - he uses GPO which runs on a Kontakt engine. My music (click on my link below) uses Gigastudio and various libraries. I believe some other SOFTies are also going into software sampling. Hope they post their music here as well!

Oh, also do a search on softsampler in this forum. We've talked about this in great detail in the past!

Tascam has a distributor in Singapore. It is TEAC or something. But it is cheaper to and easier to get it online - directly from the tascam website.

Before taking the dive, make sure you considered the other competitors - ie Kontakt. These 2 are actually quite different, although they both play samples.

There are a couple of options to get into this, getting Gigastudio or Kontackt as a softsampler, then adding libraries that are "connected" to them is one of the ways.

Cheez is currently using gigastudio and hes loving every bit of it  . I do not own gigastudio, but i do own kontackt. however, most of my sounds come from standalones sound libraries so they do not require kontackt or gigastudio. It can be used alone as VSTs.

softsamplers/sound libraries are the way to go for extremely real sounds, especially for orchestral music. You might wanna consider buying cakewalk sonar as your sequencer, and buy a few stand alone libraries.

GPO (garritan's personal orchestra) http://www.garritan.com/ - GPO is a very good library IMO for its price, if u don have any budget, and wanna dip right into the very best, u might wanna consider east west quantum loop symphonic orchestra , there are silver gold and plat. versions. the silver one is SIMILAR in some sense to GPO and it even has choirs ! gold and plat have more range of instruments and more articulations etc etc. :).. u can check EWQL libraries out at www.soundsonline.com .

To sum it all, some libraries/instruments samples require Kontackt(Native Instruments) or gigastudio softsampler as a "base" to load the instrument, while others can be used as a stand alone sound library. Buying gigastudio is quite a hefty sum and u might wanna think twice, but cheez says that some of the best sounding instruments out there are all made for gigastudio.

It's really up to you, i personally feel that EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Plat version, + EWQL Symphonic Choirs + EWQL RA (rare insturments) + EWQL Collusus would be the ultimate and allow you to be at the proffesional level (provided you know how to use the stuff properly).

To add on, u might wanna throw in kompete 5 !!@!@!@ ultimaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... my dream is to have them all + a few huge piano libraries  .. time to start saving!

read on here :
http://tweakheadz.com/software_samplers.htm
this will give u a better idea on wads soft samplers are all about ( im abit confused also  ) ok! chill.

quote from there :
"Do you even need a Soft Sampler?

You might not. Sequencers like Fruity loops can be used as a basic soft sampler out of the box. Reason has 3 different samplers in its rack. Reaktor can be used as a basic sampler. Absynth can be used as a one-shot single sample sampler.

Increasingly, sample makers are bundling their own sample playback interface (or borrowing one) with their product so you don't have to have a soft sampler. While all these use samples at their core, you cannot load samples in or export them out. Most of the East-West stuff comes with a stripped down Kompakt or Intakt player. Yellow Tools supplies their own interface with their libraries. Garritan uses the Kontakt Player for its Personal orchestra. Wizoo products have their own. These are great for just using the supplied presets, and some may let you edit them and save them. But you won't be importing anything with these sample-playback interfaces. "

ok, i hope u get wad i mean..

Tera, better start saving! Christmas is coming and there is going to be a sale. In fact, keep a look out for Halloween sale. Most places have it.

In fact, as a previous customer of Sampletekk, I just received an email letting me purchase their recorder library (renaissance flutes) at 50% off! I think I'm going to get it! I don't have a recorder library and I can already see they will be useful in many pieces!!!

About film music, the base (or core) library must be orchestral. The best orchestral libraries need not be big and expensive like EWQLSO or VSL. Some small libraries can do very well. The key is still in orchestration skills and sequencing skills. GPO, the one tera is using, is one of the small, cheap and relatively good library. I'm now using Kirk Hunter Symphonic Orchestra - cheap, but is 30GB in size! And it sounds great!

Additional libraries will be choir (most of them expensive), piano, additional percussion, and what I call "band instruments" (ie e bass, e guitar, e piano, B3 etc). Others are all optional depending on what you write - ethnic/world instruments, electronic loops, fx and effects, etc. It's not a cheap hobby - but one can slowly build up an impressive library over the years with careful financial planning - and watch out for big sales and group buys. You can save a lot of $$$ if you buy the samples at the right time.

Actually tera, Giga no longer has one of the best instruments. It's now more or less balanced. Most sample developers now have multi-sample versions to widen their market. Also, VSL which used to be exlusively Giga, now has Kontakt version and of course, lately their own proprietary standalone engine (vienna instruments - VI). The only reason to use Gigastudio is the lower latency and higher polyphony, and of course Gigapulse. But each has their own following. People either loves Giga and hates Kontakt or vice versa. As from now, if Tascam doesn't put their act together, they are going to lose out big time. They are not doing very well at this stage. NI seems to be gaining more ground.

Oh by the way (OT), if anybody wants to get the BEST and MOST realistic bass guitar, rhodes or clavinet samples, Scarbee is having 50% off all items NOW!

awhile back i was thinking of buying the plat. bundle with ra / col / symphonic choirs , but they no longer have that bundle . haiz.. lol.. but i think im gonna buy the ivory piano library first :D..
time to start working after my Os and buy some goodie stuff.. btw , hows the recorder library like , any mp3 samples?

WOAH... sh*T!! HOLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg..thx cheez :D
i just realised soundsonline.com is still selling it cheaper haha...
