u need to find the sweet spot..

wat u mean by that? i learnt that u must kinda like "pinch" the string between the pick and ur thumb...which literally means just tapping or slightly tapping the string..but when i do that...i get a dampen sound...damn!

move your picking hand up and down the string till you find the 'sweet spot' which is essentially the spot where you'll get the harmonic. the 'sweet spot' changes according to where you fret. so.. experiment and you should get it in no time.

actually there isn't so much of a sweet spot, you can get a pinch harmonic almost anywhere along the string, provided you have proper technique, enough gain/treble..the sweet spot is probably where you feel the harmonic sounds the best..

it's not really pinching the string, per se..you just have to kind of brush it with your thumb right after your pick attack. the damping sound is probably from maintaining contact with your thumb for too long. either that, or you don't have enough gain on your guitar. i've always found that it's not that hard to pinch clean though

There are sweet spots...

On an open string, you have natural harmonics that (for example) are on the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th frets. There are more, but if you note, they are on specific places over the fretboard.

When you do a pinch harmonic, you are essentially fretting a note, then striking a "natural' harmonic at the same set intervals. So you if you fret at the 12th fret, all the harmonics will order in the same way, then repeat after 12 frets, an octave higher.

depends on what gauge string u;re using as well.. its somewhat easier to do it with heavier gauge strings... and high output pickups for that raunchy sound...

and jon is right.. its picking the sting hard and just letting your thumb brush on the string all in one move...

wahaha. another pinch harmonics thread.

the trick is and have always been to try n try n try. its hw everyone finally get to do pinch harmonics. and diff ppl haf diff way of doing it and haf their own sweet spots.

anyway i suggest u hold the pick reali low. even to the extent where the pick is of the same level as sur thumb, ie theres nothing protruding out, juz the pick resting on ur thumb. then later on when u get the squeal move the pick and find a position comfortable to u.

i'm sorry!! i din know that there is another pinch harmonics thread!! thx for the feedbacks also :D

i'm using 10s btw...mid range gauge..

+1

i would like to call it the G spot

urm...ok another problem...i am trying to get the harmonic to stay....but it kinda like fades out after a few secs!! issit coz my amp doesnt have a strong distortion?

Hahaha.. dude, how long is your "few seconds"?

If its 7 seconds, its pretty okay leh.

Even if its 4 secs, for a high harmonic, its okay.

hahas, it takes lots of practice and experiment..
there are ways to sustain pitch harms...

okey...i'll try experimenting :D it sure is a hell to get the correct sound...i mean...i'm using my amp's distortion...will it be better if i use a pedal distortion?
