Pickups

I used to think that, most heavy rock requires humbucker pickups.

Tonight, I suddenly start watching Iron Maiden videos and I'm shocked to see them using stratocasters with single coil pickups instead of most metal guitarists using ibanez and humbuckers.

What affects the sound? Is it the pickups, or pedals or their thousands-of-dollars rack?

Stacked hummies and Stratsized Humbuckers to be exact. But Im surprised they still sound straty... must be because it's slanted.

One of the guitarist currently use Super Distortion if Im not wrong.

They use SD Rails..

Adrian smith was the guy who use Super Dist..
He gigs with a SG at times.. But mostly a strat..His strat is h-s-s to accomodate the Super dist.

They help to prove that metal can be played on a strat too..:D

Well I think it shows also that Iron Maiden guit players don't use alot of gain... it is their lineup and good songwriting that really gives them their tone.

Sounding heavy does not equal to using alot of gain.

So, their single coiles are..'special' ones?

I agree about the gain issue. They dont really have those high gain chuga chuga sound.

my strat uses stacks.

they can take on a wide range of genre.

my settingas are: LIL 59 neck,LIL SD mid,Hotrails bridge

stacked pups doesnt sound like humbuckers IMO. They dun sound like singlecoils oso haha. Just dun get em

Most aftermarket pups SHOULD be able to translate some of a guitar's natural tone (sound).

I mean, if you got a strat-type guitar and fling in different kinds of single coils (real singles) - you'd be hard pressed to find a set that would totally take away the "stratty-ness".

Btw, what's the meaning of sounding stratty?!

That said... VOLUME plays a large part of sounding "heavy" too.

And of course... the attitude... the way of life... Iron Maiden = immense passion and belief in what they play. Not like the manufactured bands today...
