i mean that the pickup height is even... as in parallel to the surface...

haha i know... i'm referring to each individual pickup, not all of them... i'm trying to align them nicely with the strings... heard tat it improves the sound by somewat...

do u mean the sound with the difference of the distance between strings and pus?

i think too near will kill ur sustain

Pickup height is subjective.

First, place the pups as high as you can without your bass strings turning to mud. Watch out for a wavering, most obvious with distortion, sound when you pick a string and let it sustain, that would mean the pup is too near the strings.
Next, you can balance the tone of the pup. This would mean the pup would slant closer towards the higher strings. This is to compensate for the volume difference between the bass and treble strings. I say you can because, some ppl like more treble, some more bass so its up to you.

You got to experiment. Some ppl like their pups futher away so they have less string pull (allows slightly longer sustain) but then they have lower output. Some like it near for maximum output, but slightly shorter sustain.

Also, distance of the pups to the strings is variable due to the pup's output. An X2N shouldn't be placed too near the strings or everything will sound like mud. On the other hand, a strat's single coil can afford the closeness.

Hope that helps...

Sorry but you're mistaken. Single coils are not supposed to be too close to the strings. Too close and you'll experience "wolf" notes which is what you'd described as "wavering".

You got it right when you mentioned that the pickup should be slanted with the treble side higher than the bass side but than again, that's only for single coils.

There're various websites with pickup height adjustments. I'm sure some of you know where they are. Alternatively, you can send your guitar to have it properly set up. You'll be surprised what it'll do to your guitar in terms of playability and tone.

Ah! I stand corrected! :)

But for the treble side higher thing... I believe thats for high output humbuckers too, like the X2N... unless... thats only for the X2N!

I feel generally pickup height should be slanted wif bass side higher, to compensate for the higher action of the bass strings.

Hmm.. My pickups are closer to the strings on the treble strings, and lower on the bass strings..

Anyway, I saving up for empty71 (Malcolm) to set up my guitar.. Hahah. BTW, can you refinish my Strat to fiesta red?

Sorry, can't do spray finish yet but God willing, soon :D I am however able to do oil finish, French Polish or clear gloss lacquer.
