pen pal

hey, does anyone know where or how i can get to know a pen pal, prefered a japanese person. im going to be studying jap language soon and i think it would be great if i could actually communicate with a real japanese person, and at the same time learn and improve on the language. so any suggestions?

at the beginning, it might be difficult to communicate with a nihonjin (japanese person) in writing, because the language is written in hiragana or katagana, ie. japanese characters. if he writes in romanji, ie. english spellings of the characters, you might not be able to pick much in the long run. anyway what i am trying to say is, a little while after you learn the characters, you can then start communicating constructively.
you can join the japanese association. they have lots of activities and magazines, etc.
regarding pen pals, i believe by then, you would have met a few of their locals in singapore who would be only too happy to communicate with you, in exchange of you teaching them, perhaps mandarin?

easiest way to get in i think, is to have a fren bring u there. or else i think u might need membership. but gotta check, cos they have courses there also, so you might not need membership in that sense. they do conduct things like tea-drinking, etc. this ocha (tea) thing is a big thing with nihonjins (japanese). almost a ritual and spiritual. so in a way, this is a good place for you to immerse, besides going to japan!
i have forgotten much because you need to practise speaking the language, and you can't do much, talking to yourself! :smt042

Tea drinking? Thats damn speciescist. Why don't they have more milk drinking ceremonies... I'm hurt . :(

haha ok thanks for the info duskalways.

Hi Wetsoil,

Just a word of advice ...

Given "Jap" is a derogatory term, its best left out in any conversations with the Japanese.

Some do take offence to the term (even if they don't show it) ....

Whilst you study the language, I suggest you also pick up a book on Japanese customs which gives insight to the customs, body language intepretations and most importantly the Do's and Don'ts in dealing with Japanese.

:D
