...or maybe a jail term?

How can the lawyers say its uncommon? Two nights ago the taxi we were in almost hit a FW running across the road under the Mcritchie flyover. Nearly caused an accident. If it had been one, the cabby said he'll be the one 'paying' for not keeping a proper look-out. Not the pedestrian. Seems unfair to me.

pedestrians must be responsible for their own safety.i was cycling in east coast n had to jambrake n fall just cos some dumb kids refuse to get out of the way even when my bike was nearing them at the entrance of the bikeshop.not even an apology from those idiots.wish i had chosen to bang into them instead

There's a traffic light just outside my house. Everyday, I will hear jam brakes and will quickly pop my head out to see if any accident.

For this case, it has nothing to do with PRCs. Many locals crosses as though they own the roads too. Many idiots would even just walk casually (instead of running) even though they were jaywalking and there are vehicles incoming.

Hitting someone is a traumatic thing, and drivers shouldn't be punished if the fault lies with the pedestrians. If a pedestrian crosses the road dangerously and got hit but survives, it is she/he who should be fined or even jailed (instead of the driver). I've never believed in punishment according to consequences. A failed attempted murder IS still murder in my book. Grievous bodily harm should be regarded as manslaughter imo.

However regardless of the tragic consequence of the pedestrian's fault, this is still a freak accident, and $1500 IMO is an appropriate form of punishment (leaning on the lenient side).

Just my opinion.

I think the authorities need to come down hard on the jaywalkers regardless of 'nationality, race, gender, age, sex or religion' cos the traffic rules are there for ALL road users to follow.

In the papers most of the time are reports of motorists being fined etc. What aboot them jaywalkers....

Happened to me once too at EC park. I had my 2-yr old kid in the child seat at that time.

Seconded. There are too many dumb kids on the cyclist lanes at East Coast Park. The Park should do something to get people to walk on the walking path so that we cyclists can have a smooth journey.

There was once I swerved and fell to avoid this girl who jumped into my path, and her group of friends scolded me for "injuring their friend" (when it was just a minor scratch). One of them even threatened to call the police for "reckless riding" (hey, they jumped into my path and they weren't supposed to be on the cycling track) and demanded "medical bills" (what, for a minor scratch?!) but thankfully, a huge group of cyclists saw what happened and scolded those kids back.

And I injured my head and hip because of that accident. Didn't even ask them to foot my bill. Pfft.

maybe if you faked serious injury (rolling on the ground like them overpaid footballers), they'll be running scared shitless!

It seems that once someone gets on a bicycle, the value of his life drops down low. It's quite established that cyclists, even responsible ones, are seen as nuisances by both pedestrians and drivers. Perhaps if our government had some avid cyclists, they'd understand that no matter what, whether pedestrian, driver or cyclist, no person can be valued so cheaply as $1,500.

If the person who died in this accident is not the cyclist but the pedestrian, what do you think the verdict be?

I was Cycling at East Coast Park just last week. Cycling to the Macs there. Then got this group of ah-bengs walking TOWARDS me. They then purposely form a line blocking my way, thinking that it was funny. so i no choice but to cycle on the grass patch onto the pedestrian side and cycle back onto the cycling track after i pass them. People nowadays...
