yea, works same for bass.. i'm using a bass distortion as well.. what i do is i stomp once again, only when the songs starts, and when hiss don't actually matter. haha. unless you don't mind carrying an extra pedal around, then yeah go ahead.
i honestly haven't tried the beta alvin noise gate, it's cheap though, and i heard it's pretty reliable. bring down your rig to standard value, and try out if the pedal works or if it sucks your tone.
