Pedals-Direct-Drive Response Will Allow You Play Faster Than Chain Response-True?

Double-Pedal - That Direct-Drive Response Will Indefinetely Let You Play Faster Than Chain/Belt Driven Pedals ? – True ?

Is it True that in Double-Pedalling - - - Direct-Drive Pedals eg ( Yamaha Flying Dragon or says – Axis ) Will Allow The Drummer – to Play Faster Than his Normal Speed.

Eg..Drummer plays 180bpm on Double-Chain can now play at 200bpm – because he switch to using Direct-Driven Pedals ?

Not a drummer but my drummer prefers the iron glide compared to the demon drive. It's all in the drummer i think.

I would like to see the direct drive pedals allow energy to be flowed faster and pedals to spring forward and back with less latency,
The direct drive simply lower the amount of effort that we take to hit our double pedals as it has an improved mechanism that is better than the chain counter parts,
Most top double pedals artist are using direct drives as it gets the work done with less effort, hope that helps :)

Most who use Double-Pedals --- Wants “ POWER “ – so Apart from SPEED…A “ MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE “ of The Double-Pedal is --- “ POWER “ right ? ….Or else – Drummers wont be using Double-Pedals here….

So --- If Says “ Direct Drive Pedals “ – Offer Better SPEEDS..

Does That Also Means --- It Also Offer – “ The Strongest Attribute A Drummer Wants From His Double Pedal “ : - POWER ?

Also It has to be Light / Smooth - or else how can a Metal Drummer Tahan - 2 Hours of Non-Stop Pedalling during Rehersal - for ,ost songs going at 185BPM ?

So -- SPEED ..... POWER ... LIGHT & SMOOTH

Bro Eric, its flying dragon, not eagle. Hehehe, my favourite brand :D

Anyways, I tried the direct drive at yamaha, it really felt faster compared to the single chain drive I own at home.
Thing is, it seems that the direct drive is more sensitive compared to the chain drive as well.
Maybe it just me?

Just Some Discussion from my FaceBook Page
Mr. B; - I wrote my comments down there eric, Of course if u can afford, go direct drives :D

Eric: - Most who use Double-Pedals --- Wants “ POWER “ – so Apart from SPEED…A “ MOST IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTE “ of The Double-Pedal is --- “ POWER “ right ? ….Or else – Drummers wont be using Double-Pedals here….

So --- If Says “ Direct Drive Pedals “ – Offer Better SPEEDS..

Does That Also Means --- It Also Offer – “ The Strongest Attribute A Drummer Wants From His Double Pedal “ : - POWER ?

Mr. B: - I would say that the power comes from the human physicality, and playing with correct technique is super important,

Mr. M: - Chain driven pedal reacts 80% bcoz of the stack movement of the chain..direct drive dont have stack movement bcoz of its steel attachment to the footboard amd the beater..

Mr J: - From the opinion of a beginner drummer, when u play fast, power might be sacrificed but muscle power can be trained, so it is relative as well.

Mr M: - All pedals are powerfull its just a matter of where to hit the SWEET SPOT of the footboard..HEEL UP + DIRECT DRIVE + SWEET SPOT OF THE FOOTBOARD = GUTLING GUN....

Eric: - Bro M ( This is what I wanna find Out ) Chain driven pedal reacts 80% bcoz of the stack movement of the chain..direct drive dont have stack movement bcoz of its steel attachment to the footboard amd the beater.
Eric: - All Things remains Constant ( Status Quo) – Same Drummer With Same Technique - - Different Double Pedals – will Perform Indefinitely Different in terms of Their Speed & Power here to him ..- Pls NOTE & Its Very True.

Eric: - My Opinion - Not All Pedals Are Powerful ( Besides After Adjustments is Done On – How Far Back the Double Pedal Beater Apart From The Batter-Skin) here ..Where to Hit/Step on the FootBoard ( Have something to do with Speed here ) plus Heel-Up or Heels Down..( Techniques Apply Here yes).

Eric: - The Nearer The Beater is to The Batter –Skin – ( The Closer The Gap) – Naturally The Faster It Should Be here – However this Trade-Off is – POWER ( as The Gap is Closer) …. So – Which Pedal today – Offer an Advantage here ? ( In Comparison) – Does The Theory of the “ Stack-Movement” still Applies here then ?- or something NEW has to comes into Play here?

Please share with us your Experiences & Opinion Here – Many Many Thanks

Bro Alfe ( DXS ) Drum Xchange Singapore Chairman – If you are Reading This ---

I hope DXS – in ( one of our Next Coming Meetup) can have – Practical / Testing On The Different Pedals & Different Brands/ Direct, Chain, Belt Drive) - - But this calls for --- DXS Drummers Bringing their Very Own Double-Pedals to DXS Meetup to SHARE in one of this Meetup – so that we can all – find out for Ourselves…here.

Just Need to List - Who will be Bringing Which Pedal

Different Pedal Brands / Types / ( for Different Drummers ) – on how they View – POWER and SPEED and Light / Smoothness of these…

There must be Strictly No Baisness ( just OPENESS ) ….Let’s See ..I don’t know neither.

Eg - A Same Drummer will try - all 4 Types of Pedal at one go - eg Direct Drive - Mapex, Yamaha, Pearl, Axis etc etc...

Then NEXT:-

Compare it with the Different Double-Chain Type - We have accessible there.

Yamaha, Pearl, Tama, Mapex, Axis ? … All these Brands now has – Direct Drive Double Pedals…

Most have Double-Chain too…. And It will really be Nice to Know - - given he Opportunity in DXS ( where else can we all DRUMMERS COME TOGETHER & SHARE )

BUT Alfe… Can we have at least have 4-Drum Kit again – you and Mel ( that small Pearl Rythmn Export Kit ) --- bring again lah ok ?

AND - at Scape in our Next DXS Meetup – To find this out ?

It Should Be Exciting & Fun to Find Out

PS: - And if the Drummer wanna something more COncrete -- Maybe we can ask NIGEL of DRUM RESOURCES to help here --- the WFD Measuring Thing for the Bass Drum --- He has it...

[/B]

nice topic for discussion.

this phrase is very true - "different double pedals will perform indefinitely different"

there are too many possible combinations and adjustments for any single pedal, coupled with the many brands and models out there.

once you factor in... even drummers technique (posture, seat height, muscles used, heel heights, angle/type of motion used to generate one hit) are indefinitely different .. it becomes impossible to nail down to a single factor (direct drive better than chain)

that said, i have observed the newer pedals have quicker response than well-known pedals that have been around last 10-15 years.

on personal note, these are the pedals i've tried i group them this way:

first group: tama iron cobra (power glide/rolling glide) , yamaha single chain, dw5000 - good up to 180+ bpm

2nd group: slightly newer ones : dw9000 , iron cobra flexi glide, pearl eliminators, yamaha flying dragons - smoother than first group, easily good up to 200bpm

3rd group: very new ones (last 5 years or so) : axis, trick, pearl demon drive, mapex p980a, mapex falcon (chain & direct) - they're that bit smoother than 2nd group

that said i'm from the old school (slow !!) my practice routine revolves around life at the 100-200bpm range. sigh... haha

nowadays kids very advanced .. i see some of them going 220bpm (extreme metal speeds range 210-250) ... is really cool ... some of them even use el cheapo pedal.... it seems it just boils down to how fast you can twitch ...

some other notes:
- tim waterson (youtube him) modify his tama ICs and can hit 220-250bpm range, with heel toe hits above 300bpm

- axis/trick pedals have a super response where the pedal continues moving back and forth extremely quickly after initial hit. theoretically if you can align your twitch to match the response of the pedal the double pedalling becomes kind of effortless

- super fast response pedals might seem lacking power but power generated by several factors including size of bass drum, amount of bass drum muffling (putting stuff inside bass drum), beater type, size, material, beater length etc.

- i was watching a regular dude on youtube (looks like some guy just play bedroom drums) and he hits 240 just by twitching and claims he can do it on all pedals he own (yamaha, mapex, pearl, tama etc.) ... is incredible

Thanks for all these Value Info …. Can you arrange to Have Drummers here in Soft for a Topic like these to be included ( Practically) into the Next Coming DXS Meeting / Meetup Brother..

Maybe – We can Asked Drummers attending – to put their NICK up ( eg Like Before)

(1) Plainsman ( Mapex Falcon- Direct Drive ) – as you are a Mapex Endorse Drummer
(2) RudimentalDrummer ( Pearl Elims – Double Chain – Red Cams)
(3) James ( Take Video ) whahahha.
(4) edrummer
(5) Schtauffen ( Yamaha Flying Dragon – Direct Drive)
(6) Chaos931 ( Latest LongBoard – Axis – Direct Drive )
(7) Jerryon221 – ( Tama Iron Cobra – Double Chain )
(8) Etc etc etc…..

Those that stipulate the Nick-Name and ( Double-Pedals With Their Brands & Types) – Please come.

NOTE: - It is Really Great – If We Can Have Alot of Drummers – Coming to DXS – to bring their own Double-Pedals – Irregardless of Brand… ( NO Double-Pedals - also can come and TEST IT OUT )

Eg Who knows… I mean someone bringing an Eliminator – might be using a – Yellow Cams ( or white or Blue Cams) ..I mean---

This Will be a Fruitful-Gathering for us all DRUMMERS…. Where we can ALL GATHER – and TRY-OUT the Different Double-Pedals

Bro Eric, next DXS decided I will try to drop by with my pedals. Btw I'm using a SINGLE-CHAIN drive. the DFP8215. One of the older series. Been with me for 2-3 years liao. The direct drive one is just one that I tried in Yamaha PS. Haha.
