Pedalboard Re-wiring

Hey guys, just got my Pedaltrain Jr and when i hooked up my pedals, everything was really messy, probably cause my patch cables are too long, and not only that, my daisy chains not long enough as well :S.

I have about 7-8 pedals that i'm will have, right now i have 6, just wondering which store does rewiring so that my patch cables are really short and not.... super messy like mine and where can i get custom Daisy Chain wire lengths, and probably how much roughly it'll cost?

I would guess using either lava cables... George L's cables... or if its too expensive, some inexpensive cables that i can use to join my pedals, and if really too hard, get a regulated power supply if its more practical?

So to all Pedaltrain Jr. users, do you use Adapters or Regulated Power Supplies, even though it was made for the Regulated Power Supplies

I believe your daisy chain issues should be solvable by good positioning of the daisy plugs. If say the distance between 2 pedals is really too long maybe u can consider not plugging in one of the daisy plug to increase the length of your "chain".

To neaten up your board you can consider using small cable ties to tie up excess cable/daisy chains and it should hide really neatly below the PT. There is no excuse to look messy with a PT !!! hahahah

I think custom patch cable can be real neat but it would be really expensive. I personally use a few of these kinda plugs http://standardvalue.com.sg/store/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=37
they are low cost and since there are no wires involved, just plugs, the signal going through has no loss of treble. Most importantly it really saves space

Sure can be done one. I mess with several arrangements until I found one I'm happy with.

I'm using TYmusic Canare GS-4 and their flat heads, so that helps a lot. Plus I had difficulty with one pedal, so for that cable I asked for a custom length. After that it became perfect.

I'm using a regulated power supply, initially T-Rex Fuel Tank JR, then CIOKS Schizophrenic.

Customised patch cables do not need to be expensive! Check with TYMC on pricing for Canare cables with flat pancake-style right-angled plugs, cheap and good. If need be bring down your PT Jr to measure and get it right. Two of those pancake plugs back-to-back is no thicker than a straight male-to-male plug.

Only go for George L, Lava or whatever other "high end" cable if you have tried and are convinced it's better for you.

What daisy chain are you using? The Visual Sound ones (sold separately from Onespot adapter) are ridiculously long for me. I could go all around a PT-2 and my pedals were not arranged neatly side by side. All different sizes of pedals and facing different ways, but I always had enough slack to go under the PT and even have to cable tie the excess. I also have a Godlyke daisy chain which is slightly shorter between each plug but still more than enough. Between these two brands you have a choice of 5, 8, or 11-plug daisy chains.

I wouldn't recommend this.

Not all pedals have their jacks perfectly lined up together. For example one pedal could have it's jack taller than the pedal beside it. If you try to connect them that way it causes tension on areas which were not meant to handle such pressures, such as the jack.

Now even if let's say you have a board of 10 Boss pedals and everything lines up perfectly, if they are velcro-ed down to the board, removing the pedals from the board is going to exert alot of tension on the jacks since you need to pull the pedal upwards to dislodge the velcro.

+1 to dudelove's warning about these: http://standardvalue.com.sg/store/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=37

In the long run they will damage your pedal jacks.

Bring your board down to TYMC have them make some measured flat head patch cables for you. Relatively cheap. Can't go wrong.

Lava and George L cables, not unless you're gonna spend the fortune on the soldered ones. Personal rule of thumb: soldered patch cables mean no scrambling minutes before going live to check which solderless patch cable on your board is cutting off your signal.

Cheers!

Actually the Lava solderless one's are very reliable. I have no really heard any stories about them failing catastrophically. George L's on the other hand, from first hand experience, they seem to fail at the worst possible times. On stage.. And troubleshooting means you've gotta check every cable one by one.

I would recommend the Lava solderless though. Especially if you're the type that swaps pedals around often. I'm using the soldered ones, so I don't have the option of cutting or extending my cable lengths if I ever need to, so there's abit of regret there.

But your best bet is to go to TYMC and get your pedalboard wired with Canare's by them.

Try to look for the Sommer Tri-cone with Neutrik plugs at TYMC. It's what I use and I like that it's stable and noise-free and that the neutrik plugs don't grab on the jacks of the pedals. I changed to this from the small-diameter Canares with amphenol plugs. The amphenols tend to grab the jacks and it has a soft/flexible soldering point so it tends to somehow flap when you move the pedals causing static noises/intermittent signals. The Neutriks(which won't fit with the Canares I mentioned btw) have rigid soldering points that stays stable and noise-free.

Given your situation of operating more than 3 pedals, AVOID George L's to preserve your sanity, they have a habit of crapping out where it matters most: during gigs when things are getting moved around a lot. They also are "too transparent" enough to make your whole rig brighter in a harsh way(unless you want that).

If you want a neater and more stable power supply(albeit more expensive), I'd go for one of the Cioks.

The George L's and Lava Cables are quite expensive, about $15-$18 for 15cm if i'm not wrong. You're actually paying more for the head which costs $10-$12 if I'm not wrong.

I have about 9 pedals on a PT2 and intending to go to TYMC to get it wired with either Canare or Mogami cables. They can wire it for you at a fee of $30.

Maybe you can come with me then can get some further discount:D

Core X2 DIY cables, to me it sounds better than George L. George L very bright sound, but the bass and mid range not there. The Core X2 is quite bright sound also but it has more bass and mid rang freq then George L. I tried both cables so yea I've heard the sound 1st hand

Thanks for all the replies, really educative HAHAHAHA

@J.Custom
Does $30 include patch cables and the daisy chains?

@Likui
Where can i get the Core X2?

So everyone basically said go to TYMC and check it out hahah I will! After i'm happy with my pedalboard i shall go. Just ordered my wah, gonna get a Booster and 1 more pedal, not sure, only have drives, delay and wah! HAAHAHAH

Hahahaha! So roughly how much would the cables cost :S. Lets say.... 8 pedals most of which are side by side just 1 or 2 cables that are about.... 20cm to connect my bottom left pedal to my top right :P
