PEARL EXPORT or TAMA SUPERSTAR?

 woah what a response!

NEW UPDATE. my friend said he could get me a Carlos set at $550, new paiste cymbals ($90 x 2), double pedal $180, adding to around 1k? What you guys think of this deal? I know Carlos suck so ima changing the skins to Ahead skins once i get enough cash again.

you guys think?
:?:

music them at peninsula could get you one with pedals, thrones and cymbals for 590dollars. but you have to wait caue they just sold a set not too long ago.

Hey Nysk. Dunno if you're the same guy who sold me the paiste splash.

Hey ziyan. You said earlier that your budget would be around 1.5k eh? my recommendation would be to get a reasonable drum kit first. The way I look at it. Its a long-term investment. Especially if you intend to take drumming very seriously. Don't go for tamas especially their swingstar as it is made from mahagony which is rather unsuitable for drums. The export series's poplar would be a better bet. DOn't worry about loudness at home. I live in a HDB too and my neigh don't complain. Aww heck there are three drummers in my block. Eh heh. Common sense: don't play at night. In the day, the law protects you seriously.... a reason not to get lower end sets is the resellability. Once you want to upgrade. if you're current set is urh.... pathetic. its gonna be hard to sell.

Paiste is good....well their signature series are anyways. Judging by the price tag $90. their probably the 101 or pst 3 series. which is made of brass. In the long-run you are gonna get really tired of them. They lack the sonic qualities of good bronze. Save up and get a good beginner's set of sabian b8. Zildjian zxts and zbt suck no offense but well ya...

Regarding sweelee. their bb people are rather unfriendly. thats why i go sims dr branch. i got contacts there anyways heh.... regarding honest... well their one of the main companies ruling the instrument market in s'pore aside from yamaha and excel. So they can pretty much do whatever they want with their prices heh..

well said freakae..

erm, ziyan, bout the carlos set, i think u should give it a pass if ur dead serious on your drums..

there are other factors besides the wood and number of plies in the drum.. there are also hardware considerations to be thought through.. i.e. the way the 1st and 2 toms are mounted, whether the stands are the Solid kind..

the Export series has solid hardware and the toms are held externally, which means the tom arms don't go into the toms or even touch them. They are held by these clamp like things on the outside instead. This sorta makes them sound nicer. the hardware doesn't disrupt the sound when u hit ur drums in any way..

Erm, if u wanna know more u can visit the pearl website too..

as for the cymbals... YES.. stay away from Zildjian's zxt and zbt.. trust me, i've used zbts in sch last time and you really don't wanna go there..

yep freakae i'm the one who sold u the paiste splash, hows it doing? still havnt sold my china though :(

ziyuan, ya if u want a good entry set go for at least the ludwig accent, thats pretty good but not many ppl hav heard of the brand i guess (i dono y it rox!), they got it at sweelee. carlos im not very sure of the quality, its a local brand so i guess thats y ppl look down on it... but hey, if u jus wanna get a set for practice's sake, go for the carlos. then when u get btr, do a hugeee upgrade like a tama starclassic or pearl reference? haha! but that would take quite sometime to save up for. and as for cymbals, if u really want them to last you, seriously brass is not the choice. brass cymbals dont really sound bad to me (only pearl cx300 sounds like craphell &$^%&$& ^&*$&%), but u shdnt trust its durability. brass and sheet bronze also dont project as well as cast bronze cymbals. a good starting set of affordable cast bronze cymbals are the istanbul mehmets which are super popular ard here? retails at 650.

i wont say they are that bad.. but personally, i feel ZBT's sound better than the ZXT's.

Zildjian has new ZHTs too. Those sound better. But rather pricey. Heh. I've got a friend working at yamaha. Says that the cymbals are marked up slightly. Yamaha controls the zildjian market here. So i guess they can do that. Sabian has better models at that price. But I still feel nothing beats Paiste signature series.

once again thanks to all you guys here man. so pro!! :D

well roughly how much is the ludwig accent set? what you guys think of this set compared to the pearl export? Pearl export is around how much ah?

hey seth, were u from phs last time? haha. just curious. anyway, are tama drums all mahagony? no maple meh?

OH YA! how's the Peace DNA? i saw it on the webby.
maybe when i go buy the set i'll ask all of u out man :D

ziyan. the tama drums have different woods depending on their series. lemme help you here abit.

Tama:
Stagestar: kapok wood
swingstar: mahagony
rockstar: basswood with 1ply birch
superstar:basswood and birch Note: the superstar is same as rockstar. The rockstar series was replaced by it
Starclassic Birch: Birch (duh...)
Starclassic b/b: birch + bubinga
Starclassic maple : maple
Starclassic Bubinga: Bubinga

Pearl:
Rhythm Traveller: kapok wood
Target: Kapok wood
Forum :poplar
Export: 3 versions EX ELX EXR. All poplar.
Session Custom: Maple
Session Studio: Birch
you can only prob afford up to here... got masters and masterworks, reference.

Ludwig accent: mahagony. if you're talking about this particular set. The export is better.

I'll love a tama starclassic birch tho. eheehee

hey

1) volume of drumming depends ALOT on the player itself too...if ur woprried about complains...go get a the promark cool rods or smth...expensive ( around 20 - 30 )...but effective

2)i think stagestar/target is also p. mahogany

3)i noe the carlos + cymbals and double pedals may seem like a good deal, but bear in mind. Gear investments are long term stuff....get smth that can last. Example double pedals....once u have a band, at some point of time you would resort to bringing ur own pedals. They must be lasting for gigs, jams and purpose. What about stands? You wouldnt want it to fall after playing for awhile would you? THE THRONE!!! ( the most underlooked piece of hardware )...would u sit on smth comfy or a throne look a like with lack of foam? Cymbals are just as important....all long term stuff...

But in the end....its up to u. Save for something you want/need...not on impulse...this way you would treasure it. Good luck with your search! :)

Carlos stuff may not be that fantastic, but they aren't that bad either. Main thing is that they don't have much resale value if you have the intention to upgrade/sell it off some time in the future.

hey thanks man. but whats the rough cost of an export huh? i think i'm like, more or less settling for this piece if the deal is right man. this sweelee sale have drums anot huh? :D

yup they will have 2 exports, the export radical and export select. the export selsect is a teeny weeny bit more ex than the radical due to its finish, but it will be mroe suitable for u as the particular model of the export select at sweelee has smaller tom sizes than the radical, which will help ur hdb case a bit... both will be a bit over 1k after discount. and a hand hammered cymbal pack (hats, ride, crash) would do just fine for u as they are more musical and less projected than the other sabians like aa, aax or hhx. of course if u want the more economical b8's, then with 400 (after 50% off) you can get a full pack of sabian b8 cymbals (16,18 crashes, 14hats, 20ride, 10splash, 18china), they too would be perfect for hdb dweller.

so it will be like this (after discount)
export (1.15k?) + HH pack (550) =1.7k
or + B8 complete set (400+) =1.6k?

but i think u gotta camp quite early if u wanna get hold of them, at least overnite! but first of all, u also beta pray that someone from the sweelee staff doesnt want a new drum set! (or someone who noes)
Haha seth_drums, ur dad mus be quite pro to get the guy at sweelee to confess for his corruption

neh.. the guy my dad talked to was a different guy from the one at the drums when i ran to the drum set... and the guy didn't confess.. i'm just glad i got my export in the end.. i only found out my dad got the drums when i walked back to the counter after getting my cymbals.. by then i had already given up hope bout getting my export.. haha.. thank God my dad managed to get it in the end la..

yeap carlos drums arent THAT bad. Tuned well + proper heads = quite ok...ive played on 1 b4. unless ur planning to bring ur carlos for gigging...then its a different story...

well roughly how much is the ludwig accent set? what you guys think of this set compared to the pearl export? Pearl export is around how much ah?

hi, if you are considering Ludwig, do consider a higher end grade of Ludwig which swee lee still has but does not display - the Ludwig Accent Cs Custom/Custom Elite.

I own that particular set(power series) and i have no complains about the 8-ply 100% birch except for the powerful projection of the wood itself which sometimes can be a problem with the neighbours. It cost me about $1300.

If im not wrong the Ludwig Accent is made of an assortment of 9 plies of cheap wood and by the looks of it, i wouldnt go there.

Happy drum shopping =)

:D :D

how bout pearl target? a bit cheaper that export (=
i dont tink i'll be bringing this set to gig in the future tho, just to practice for a while b4 i sell if off to other newbies then.

u guys think?
