PEARL EXPORT or TAMA SUPERSTAR?

hey everyone,

i'm a newbie drummer finally deciding to get a drumset, but can't decide! 8O

i've been reading quite some reviews but what do you guys think? my budget would be around 1k to 1.5k, cos i hafta save up the rest to cage up the set and sound proof it..
SIGH. the downs of living inm a HDB man.

THANKS PEOPLE :D

use the money u planned to sound proof ur room to add on and get a nice E-kit if u r not bringing ur set out for gigs or performance. hart or pintech is good...or even roland...do consider...

Cheers! :D

haha export and superstar will kill ur neighbours... those sets are suitable for life gigging due to their projection capability... if you are restricted to those sets then yep, do what actorial says, sound proof you room(a lot), but that would severly cancel out your budget... i personally dont believe in electric drum sets but that budget would fit one... or perhaps consider a rhythm traveller, if you just want one for practice.

but seriously, according to law, as long as u dont play after 7pm, ur neighbours got no right to complain, but if u wanna be frens with them then i guess you btr not get a set too loud... but if ur neighbour(s) is some whining spoilt brat, then by all means go ahead!

Hi.

I stay in a HDB and i use an export radical (exr) i got from last year's swee lee sale.

What was said earlier bout it not being meant for home usage is completely true. I've had to compromise a significant amount of space in my puny bedroom to fit it in. the bass is 22", which is 2 inches larger in diameter than e standard (20" kick) and the floor tom is a FLOOR tom. I mean that the floor tom is mounted on the floor. Not like in other sets where it maybe mounted with a stand which also holds a cymbal.

Well I assume that the pearl export u may be eyeing is the EXR in strata red colour from swee lee, having mentioned your budget is $1.5k. I hope my comments have been of help to you.

Oh yeah, i almost forgot. I don't get complaints from the neighbours coz i use vic firth rutes which sorta lessen my volume and i don't kick very hard. I find playing under such conditions actually helps you play with control and restraint in terms of dynamics....

Umm.. it's all in what u want.. i intend to take my drum kit out for gigs next time in the future...

hmm. tricky.

does yr budget includes cymbals?

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES!

well, not including cymbals, cos i meant my budget for the SET alone is 1k to 1.5 k, but the sound-proofing and stuff would come later i guess

well, space constraints won't be a problem for me cos i have a spare room in the house right now..

for the reply on Rhythm Travellers, well, what do you guys think? I heard they weren't really nice sounding things huh.

KEEP REPLYING THOUGH! THANKS!! :D

oh man even if im a drummer i wouldnt want to be a neighbour of someone who has exports or superstar. would be very loud. get a electronic kit if you want to play freely. electronic kits arent loud and.. yea you should get a pintech.

tried a rythmn traveller before.. erm.. not nice la.. when u get better u'd definately want new and better drums.

WELL, since u mentioned that your budget is $1.5k on the drums ALONE, then go try the session custom series of drums from pearl. They're on at $3k retail price. But the swee lee sale's on soon (50% off), so if ya don't mind Q-ing for 13hrs like i did last year, u should go for it.

Quality Maple shell drums which are smaller and more compact than the export radical next to it down at bras basah. erm.. the stock skins are double plies too if i'm not wrong. meaning they sound kinda nice of the rack already. you really should go down to BB and see for yourself to check em out and enquire..

regarding E-drums, i don't like em. the only one i find OK is the most ex one down at yamaha in plaza sing i tried recently. forgot the price..

hope i'm of help. sorry, i'm really unfamiliar with tama..

yea. buy a good set, dont think that youre just a newbie and get a cheap set. you will definitely need a good one next time.

hmm...if not spare some hard work like me :D i converted my Rhythm traveller to E kit...but currently still on the way...cheaper and u can get good quality too :D

Cheers!!

oh hey thanks again to all of ya! :D

well, i really don't like e-kits cuz it sorta kills the feel if you know what i mean.. haahas.
back to SETH_DRUMS, well yea i'll head down to BB to check it out, but sweelee sale is in like, november right? the set your talking bout right, is it as LOUD as the EXPORT set? u mean the BB sweelee right?

But i heard that sweelee will anyhow quote their prices man. cos there was once a pedal during the sale season that says 40% off but still costs more than the reular price so.. yup u know what i mean. haha.

BUT 13 hours is some crazy shit man! maybe i should get in through my instructor. haha. *pull some strings*

sweelee dont hav sessions in stock at their BB show room now

theres something fishy about swee lee's drums during the sales. once i was amongst the 1st batch of people to rush in after they opened the door. lo and behold.. most of the drumsets had "sold" pasted on em already. its obvious swee lee doesnt want to sell em. sigh.

man.. go to the swee lee threads man.. the sale is 1ST JULY! haha....

i don't know bout the price jacking n all.. but the 50% off there is as good as it gets..i've compared with US online music websites and it doesn't get cheaper than the swee lee sale i think.....

well.. pearl's session custom should be less loud than my export coz common sense should tell me that it been a smaller kit overall, the sound should be less loud..

aiya its corruption la... confirm got ppl who noe the sweelee staff ask them to reservve for them all that shit... if life's unfair, do you think sweelee would be?

yeah.. i experienced the same thing. lucky my dad got in later and cleared up things.. apparently some guy working there wanted it i think.. i almost cried man... 13hrs for nuts..

i think the session's still there.. i saw it the last time i went.. it's blue in colour.. near the glass room..

yeah.. i know the website's outdated..

nope session is gone... unless u saw it yesterday? haha... and seth, was the export radical the oni set u cud get 8O ... which batch were you for the sale?

ok.. then maybe it IS gone... oh well... gone so close to the sale.. either someone not in the know got it at FULL PRICE so near the sale, or SOMETHING FISHY's going on..

well the export was the only one in my budget that i wanted.. it was only that or nothing at all.. for the sale last december i was in the first batch with that slip of survey paper they handed out. only those with the paper could go in first.. i still have that paper in my room.. fond memories...

hmmm, tama rockstar would be comparable to export... hmm yea maybe something fishy... someone who noes the SL ppl probably took it home first, then on the day itself they just cash it in on the sale itself... haha... but i trust *nudge nudge* that sweelee wont do this kind of thing as they are a well respected company with honest policies and abolutely no corruption  ?
