Hi guys,

Let's say I have plain looking project guitar that I would like to do some fun cosmetic facelift to it.

Do I:

1) Get some paint from a shop (any paint) and start work

2) Get some paint (special paint) and start work

3) Use markers

or

4) get someone else to do it?

thinking of just writing words on it

thanksss!

spraying is not as easy as one can imagine it to be. for beginners, its best to watch how the pros do it instead of just trying cos a whole lot of money would be wasted in the process.

1st, you'll need many grades of sand paper. from course to super fine. use water while sanding and please be patient with the paint as it takes time to dry. make sure the finish is smooth before attempting to spray anything cos your aim is to make the paint look as even as possible throughout.

for the paint I would recommend spray cans. the best paint for the job is Anchor which is readily available at arts friend.

markers is necessary only for minor touch ups.

getting someone else to do it would be so much easier. you have to find the right people though. the price range for resprays are from $200 - $350. you get what you pay for. a lot of effort is involved but if you have the time, money and interest, I would say just try it out for fun.

you need sandpaper
spray paint , desired colour from hardware store.

Lots of elbow grease.

Rough sand the body, spray light coats. Letting them dry between each coat

Then after 5 coats, sand to remove bumps etc. then spray another 5 coats, till u get an even coating.

To prevent spitting from cans, put them in warm water. Mix boiled kettle water 7 parts to 3 parts cold tap water is fine.

Stand them upright in the basin and not let the tips touch the water.

Spray till there's around 85% of paint inside, then change cans. Get 3 cans for convenience.

Then sand smooth to a mirror shine going thru sandpaper till 3000 grit.

This is the basics, some people have minor variations, but you need to spray, wait, sand, spray, wait, sand , then final polish thru till 3k grit.

Have fun and good luck.

P.S , it helps to paint on a warm sunny day.

And if you're writing words. Use a marker or use vinyl lettering from art friend. Removable as well.
