p2p gigs: a misunderstood cause?

as the music scene grow, more people are organizing "pay-to-play" gigs, which is a gig where by bands that perform, have to sell a certain number of tickets.

organizers of "pay-to-play" gigs have often been thought of as money minded people who try to earn money from bands that need recognition.

i for one, am an advocator of such gigs and i feel that organizers have been misunderstood.

therefore this thread is for you, the organizers, to step out, and let people know
1) roughly how much it cost to host a gig
2) how does the ticket prices/number of tickets need to be sold come about
3) a rough breakdown of where the money goes.

hopefully, this can help clear any prejudices we as musicians might have on them :D

note: this is not a thread to share your views on weather p2p gigs are good/effective/whatsoever. if you would like to do so, please visit

in my opinion, putting up a gig is like starting up a business, u need a capital and this capital would cover the necessities of the venture.

for example, if u book a place for a gig, i'd assume it would cost approx. $500(including equipment etc.), so instead of making bands sell tickets, u come together with a group of 10 frens, and chip in $50 each.. GIG IS SET TO GO.

and let's say u sell $8 per ticket, and all the people who are involved with the gig were to publicise ur gig and gain at least 100 people to come for ur show, u'd get $800(note that this is only 100people. if u can get more to come, that'd be better). so GIG IS SUCCESSFUL.

put aside $100, and let's assume u get 10 bands to play for the gig, each band can be given a token of $10 for their effort(kopi money) and u'd still gain $20 each..

bands happy, ur group of organizers happy, the crowd happy, everyone's happy, u leave the venue happy.

and the most important thing of organizing and putting up a show shouldn't solely be abt the money, but instead how much fun u'd gain from the experience, and the friends that you'll make along the way.

care to share what you guys think?

Your costings are too simple.

You left out MIs, PA, ticketing costs and application for PELU (which most peeps dun anyway). You find out more of those and you will have a very strong case for your support for payola (the correct term for pay-to-play) shows.
