OWC Hard Drives

I used to have 4 of those USB+Firewire combo housings. all spoilt/going to spoil.
OWC hdd? go with western digital / seagate. 3 to 5 years warranty.

you're better off going down to simlim. go to fuwell and ask the sales guy they're friendly and helpful.

there's 2 kinds of external hard disks, one is a "dedicated fully external" one. the other kind (which is cheaper) is buying an internal hdd + a housing = external. you get more hdd space / flexibility this way in case you decide to upgrade / put in your pc.

20¢ worth

There is really no reason to get these drives. Unless stated, they usually use OEM drives with questionable specs. On the website, it mentioned the transfer speed, which is unfortunately not the limiting factor for the drive. The key is the read/seek and write time.

Cheaper to get a good drive and then a housing. You'll get better performance as well.

Hi shel_keys! :D

I guess you're looking for it because of the Oxford chip? I understand its been stated somewhere you can boot-up OSX "without any problems" from an external HD via Firewire "only if the external casing uses the Oxford chip." Or you are looking at the software included...

I myself am looking for the same one (because it look good together with my oldskool G4 Sawtooth! and of course the Oxford chip), but none found here. Anyway i've since bought an inexpensive ($30+) USB+FW 400 casing and dropped an 320GB HD into it. BUT, i can't boot OSX from the external HD though... (Its used solely as backup storage.)

What Cheez and blueprintstudios said are true if you just want to use as a backup HD. BUT if you want it to be OSX bootable, go for this: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/, but without the HD. You can buy it from SLS, there's a shop at the 2nd level dealing with Mac products. I can't remember the name of the shop, sorry...

Thanks everyone for all the response. Actually it was recommended by most Pro Tools users in the Digidesign DUC forum, that's why i wanna try my luck to get this HD. Not for storage only, they said its one of the BEST (so far) and Cheapest that can do Pro Tools stuff. Specifically because of the Oxford chipset that is highly recommended by Digidesign in using FW HDD.

I got myself a Maxtor One touch plus 500GB Hoping that it is using the Oxford chipset. I've search the internet. I had no choice that time as it was the last day of the IT show so i had to buy to save. This HD can not keep up with Pro tools, it has it's issue, specially when not in used for a short time, the HD seems to be putting to sleep and will only start again in a few seconds. That is why i wanted to change and buy a new FW HD.
