eadricng, the positioning of your pups would not necessarily result in a more even tone... there's a limit to how much it can compensate... if you use .09s - .42s, your high e string would sound very thin on clean, and when you roll off the tone to get a jazzy sound, there's just not enough body in that string to make it heard after the 12th fret.
