Actually I'm an old guitarist but new rocker. have just bought a wicked Washburn electric guitar and Peavey practice amp but I can't get that great distortion sound - what do I need to add to the system to get a good distortion sound?
help!:???:

Pickups and EQ & gain settings play a very, very large part. Try experimenting with your EQ and gain, and research some pickups. :)

Aha... someone popped your rock cherry...

With a small practice amp, the sound that you get is probably thin and nasal. If you want it to be crushing, you might need a bigger amp. But of course, try out some distortion pedals before you attempt to buy a bigger amp, since some of these pedals may give you that tone you are looking for

Its never too late to rock

Ello!

Which small Peavey practice amp do you own? If its the older Rage 158 series, just ease on the "post gain" and turn the knob of the "pre gain" to 3 o'clock or more. Highs at 11 o'clock, mids and lows at 2-3 o'clock. You should be able to get some juicy overdriven tones there... ;)

If its the newer Backstage, Solo or Audition, just crank the overdrive/distortion but ease on the highs [11 o'clock maybe], because the small speakers [8" or 6"] nearly always translate to thin sounds, so cutting the highs and boosting the lows [not too much] will help a bit... :D

Try it out and let us know please...
