Not suitable to sing at all

Try Chi Xin Jue Dui By Li Shen Jie? I feel that you can sing bro, your flaws can be worked on. Just try putting more emotions when singing, then work hard on your diction. Never give up!

=/ I heard it bro, this song is a duet. I admire your bravery in trying it out, but the female parts is quite difficult... The guy parts you sang okay, albeit a few flat notes.. Try an easier song maybe? It didn't really compliment your voice..

By the way, who do you normally go karaoke with? You seem to always be alone. O_O Or did you ask your friend to hide? Mind me joining you? :D I love to go karaoke also! Hahaha!

Yea, this duet song quite hard for my vocal, too bad till now unable to find female partner to try singing.

You might not enjoy my style inside karaoke room. As i dont like to use the default mic bass, treble & echo setting provided by ktv. I like to tune down echo to about 1 to 2 - dot where 0 is off, if there is small mic volume control where mic input was, i like to turn it down very low to about 2 to 3 - dot, same goes for the bass treble if i have chance to meddle with it. And finally, music control will be somewhat higher than mic control quite low.

So if the room is small, then should be able to sound with more ease in singing as small room meaning vocal are louder due to the wall reflection and speaker being near.

So basically when u sing into mic, u use alot of strength.

Heck. Sing whatever you want bro! You've been putting in the effort to get better and improve yourself and you deserve your kudos.

You had guts and balls to put yourself out there and here. Subjected yourself to ridicule and critique and you still carried on.

Nobody can take nothing away from you. You've inspired me..

heyy! IMO, the thing bout your singing is that you're out of breath in some recording and you're using too much of your speech voice, try changing speech and falsetto to vent emotions, and work on dictions =)

you're improving from the recordings... haha thats cool.

hey dude, couldn't hear your youtube videos clearly, so i listened to the ones from the blog links u posted.

anyway, screw the instructors and whatever they said.
the problem here is ur staccato. slowly aim to get rid of it, and "connect" the words more and it should be fine. like what many others have said, it's the lack of power and emotion. judging from the youtube videos with the jacky cheung song, you aren't putting in either. it's more of increased volume, you know what i mean ? power and emotion isn't just singing out louder, it's about feeling for the song.

listen to the song you plan to cover more often, imitate (don't copy) the singer's style, and eventually inject your own style. i've been singing for a few years, all self trained, and i'm not that good myself (people told me i sucked at my first gig =/). but with dedication and consistency, improvement will follow. kudos to you to realise you need to work on it, so work on it ! also, record your voice/covers, then hear them over again to see which areas you tend to go off pitch or strain your voice, and work from there. singing is all about hard work man, talent plays a part, but more of hard work.
once you've covered the basics, maybe you could consider a singing course/lesson to take it to the next level.

good luck man !

Sing for the fun of it

Wah...when I read your posting, I really felt for you, chief. It's not easy being told you can't sing. I have not seen your youtube thing or heard you sing anywhere but I just wanted to share some lessons I have learned over time and maybe you can try out.

a. SING FOR THE FUN OF IT! Keep going karaoke... I can tell you, I frequently hear people singing in karaoke and most are CRAP. But then again, you need to realize that karaoke is for relieving stress. It should not be giving you stress! It's not a competition etc. So just go sing - if people make comments etc., let them make lah. Learn to laugh at yourself. It is ok to do this. I used to take it personally if I don't make it in an audition but after a while I learn how to laugh at my own mistakes and try not to repeat them.

b. If you want to sing English songs more, then you need to speak English more. In your case, I think you sing more Mandarin songs so be fluent in your spoken Mandarin. This will help with the diction and pronunciatino problems.

c. I used to sing while climbing stairs. With my mp3 player on, playing some song, I would be singing along with it when I climbed up the 4 flights of stairs to my hostel room in uni. I didn't realize until later that my voice had strengthened. My breath control improved and I learned how to sing from the diaphragm and not the chest or throat. You may want to try singing while jogging. Because when you jog or run, you pant. And panting uses the same "movement" as singing from your diaphragm.

d. A lot of voice improvement is done using vocal exercises. I think you might be able to find some of these online. Just practice those regularly and there should be some improvement.

e. FINALLY, remember that ultimately it is the quality of the raw material that matters. You may never be a GREAT singer or even a GOOD singer. But you can be an OK singer (I hope you are not tone deaf). Whatever type of singer you are, HAVE FUN!

The most important thing about music is HAVING FUN. You can always find someone who sings better...but you can also always find someone who sings worse. As for learning an instrument, that is a great idea. Learn guitar or drums. Experiment with songwriting. Try a bit of everything and see what happens.

GO FOR IT!

Hey dude, you are not the only one. No worries. I can't sing too. for my case people tend to give me general comments like "Alright la","not bad" or "Ok lo", but I can see the hesitation in their face..lol

It's lucky for you to be able to go for all these vocal lessons and have one-on-one sessions with instructors, well for my case, I don't even have one. I just kept asking questions here on Soft.

But I guess there are 2 things we are looking at here. Being a Singer and a Vocalist.

My definition of being singer is one who can pull singing off very well, but a vocalist is one who just have average/ or I dare say, for my case, less-than average singing skills, but owns a commanding stage presence.

People will find you a mediocre vocalist, but soon you realize that they respect you more when you are able to engage the crowd, instead of singing too melodiously like no one cares.

So just keep singing man :)

comments based from "yu tian"

1. diction
2. staccato

well, i think u have to bite ur words well first. u are currently biting wo che ye lai ye yen. for chinese songs it is more of vowels than consonants. both are still important thou.

so.... instead of "wo, che, ye lai ye, yen"
try "wo que yue lai yue yuan.

u should start out by exaggerating the vowels first.(ur mouth will look funny, but thats how it works) do "wooo quueee yuuuuee laaaiii yuuueee yuuaan" slowly... then when u're comfortable with it, u can try it at the song's tempo with slightly reduced exaggeration. pls do this with 1 breath. wooo quuee yuuee laaii yuuee yuuaan and not woo, quuee, yuuee, laaii, yuuee, yuuaan.

things to note:
1. Bite ur words properly. (it makes u sound short tongue if u dont)
2. chain your words. ( dont do staccato )
3. use ur diaphragm (try to breath in with ur mouth, and target ur breath at the lower part of ur stomach, imagine holding the air there. when u sing it out, keep the slighly tight feeling of ur stomach there)

once u sound 1.clearer, 2. sound like singing, 3. not sound strained, u'll find urself improving by 150% from what u are now! and they are not hard to do!
good luck ^^

After hearing that 雨天, honestly i have to say your a pretty bad singer, maybe you can try singing an english song.

Dude, (there is no point using diaphragm)*mistake*, i myself never believed in diaphragm theory, singing is just a natural thing.
Just connect the words and you will be fine, like this. I give you an example, " And i will always love you." In English, I is actually "Ai". So you will sing as And dai will laways love you." Understand?
Example 2
When i am down and oh my soul so weary. You wont sing as When "I" am down and "OH" my soul so weary. You will prefer to sing like When nai am down and doh my soul so weary.
No one is born to sing. I sounded like shit last time and despite discouragements, i have pursued and have gotten my desired voice.
Practise makes no perfect, it just makes permanent. Practise the right stuffs and discard the bad habits.
good luck!

if u believe that u use ur anus to support your breathing, it doesnt mean that we all use it k? =)
Or are u trying to say that u are a born singer and everything comes naturally?

i believe the above is u? pls enlighten me on your breath control, i would really like to know where'd the air support came from.

Congrats. And i wish u well for ur upcoming opera performances. =)

How does vibrato comes about? It's the one that rings right? I saw a youtube video that says vibrating the jaw to get the vibrato is a wrong way to do it.

So is there any consequence by doing the wrong way? I can come up with some teeney-weeny vibrato just by doing the wrong way. I tried to sing normally, but vibrato never comes..lol

I would really post up my singing sometimes. So people here have a rough idea of how I sounded like..haha.Cheerios :D

Vocalistman, I'll give you a reply about vibrato in another thread. The one I call "natural" vibrato. I've been meaning to write something about it anyway.

Wow nice comments there. Harden your diaphragm? I dont think that helps at all dude. I just speaking on what i learned from speech level singing. Since you are so "good". Post and a video and let us hear you out. I wondered why you used such harsh words.
And thanks to your wishes. I will do well.
