Not suitable to sing at all

Hi all,

I decided to let it all out here for my pity attention thread. I didn't mean to sound like an whiner but just didn't want to bottled it in. Since this is the largest community for my category. Budding musicians, u should been through this and understand my pain.

What if i like to sing & not deem fit to sing at all?

I started going karaoke and like singing due to my buddy who sound pro & nice, on tv win champion, contest win champion times to times. But i was real inspired by richard marx, x japan, ah du... vocal. Though i am not fit to sing their songs.

I started abuse through ah du singing, that led to staccato...

Join alot of contest, been treated like a fool on stage by judges (choose ah du song). But slowly, andy hui song came along and on contest started sound alittle better... Then as years went by, contest performance were really so awkward, stuff like out of tunes, stage fright, music can't be heard, so and so... Just too used to karaoke singing perhap...

Seek advices or training from a few instructors, music school to SLS. Different comments was made, but i felt they were just being nice.

The only true comment was the two instructor, one whom taught ah du, jj lin... and SLS Daniel Singh.

Daniel Singh - Let it be an misunderstanding.

Since then, i am an loner in karaoke except sometime join friends. Till joining contest too, but make an fool of myself. LOL.

All budding musicians, please share your opinions here if you were told u can't sing. Or comment for me.

Be true.

My current vocal progress (July 2009)

Really ar . Isn't it sad for you. Singing is part of everyone and being informed that oneself cannot sing is really depressing. Did Daniel say the reason behind why you cannot sing?

I've listened to you singing in that link you have provided. I think that you have a good chest voice but when you sing (not trying to be mean), you tend to sing at the top of your range, which tends to be off tune at times because you strained your cords . Trying dropping a few keys and i think it will be better. I look forward to your next video. Just dont strain your voice when you sing. If I am not wrong, you must have been straining you delicate voice for a long period of time lets say 2 years? Just post more videos and i will provide constructive comments, not nice comments.
GOOD LUCK

You are a winner

Jianrong,

First of all, I salute your honesty and courage. Your willingness to share your experience despite the potential ridicule is much appreciated. In that aspect, you are a winner.

Second, singing is about fun. Apart from applause and praises from audiences, never neglect the personal gratification and enjoyment you derive simply from singing.

I wish you well and many many more years of happiness and satisfaction from singing.

Daniel only good comment about me that i have wide range but not connected well. But that isn't good enough when u cant use it freely. He comment my worst is the way i speak aka my dictions. And having staccato habit.

Once present him gary cao song chen mo wan ju, the high chorus part where u got to hit ah ah~ ah... He determine i could hit quite high based on that head voice which sound like falsetto. Other mistake he pointed out was my force yell habit on some high note which require strength.

u tend to hit the point. Alway hoping i would be able to fix my vocal some fine day. Rather hard. Had been damaging for so long years.

honestly, lovelovelovelove wad they say. sing if u like. but from wad i read, u just wanna sing or use ur voice to get famous? thats a diff story.

Hi Jianrong

I'm not trying to be nice but I'm saying what I see and hear on your video. First of all, you don't have the best voice but you don't have the worst voice I heard so far. I'm puzzled how your vocal instructors gave up on you.

Ok, your voice can be train to be better. Don't compare yourself to those who are born singers. They just have it in them without any help from any vocal lesson. There are people who just can't sing. There are also people who can't sing well but able to be train to do better. So, you fall on the category of training to be better. I don't know how to help you here since your instructors all gave up on you. If your are able to listen to the CD and imitate, you'll soon to learn some technique automatically. But remember one thing, you are not the singer from that song whatever you're imitating to. Sing the way your voice is made up to. Don't choose songs that are too high for you. Get the right pitch level that suits you. If you play any musical instruments, transposing songs that you like to suit your voice would be helpful.

Don't give up!! Have to work harder!!

"Not suitable to sing"? That's the most bullshit statement I'd ever heard...
I think that argument about not being able to sing well because you can't speak well is only because SLS relies on the speaking voice to make you 'sing well'. It doesn't mean you can't sing; I mumble when I speak, but I don't mumble or anything when I sing... It's kinda like having duo-voices, yknow?

Truth be told, that isn't one of the worst voices -I've- heard... it's not the best, but with proper training and practice and time, you might make it. Your instructors are arses. I mean.. if you could sing, you wouldn't go to them for training in the first place what.. so stupid...

Don't give up k! Like what Rickylah said "honestly, lovelovelovelove wad they say." LOL

you strain a lot, but u're not tone deaf, and i'd personally only rule out someone who's tone deaf. Perhaps u can make it some how, all the best! :)

you sound ok. you can sing. lovelovelovelove them. lovelovelovelove those instructors and never return to them.

JIAN RONG YO!
Erms i heard your " Yu Tian" YOU CAN SING, YOU ARE NOT TONE DEAF, GOOD CHEST VOICE. Problems are that you do staccato too much, strain too much, lack of vibrato, your singing is too plain( as in lack of style and emotion and no variation in tone ).
My suggestion is this ( might not be the best, just personal suggestions) do hold your notes longer and add variation in tone.
GOOD LUCK AHEAD MAN

I believe everyone can sing. So don't despair if you are not as good as others.

Well, maybe you aren't competition/contest type of standard, so maybe that's one area you might want to stop trying. Instead of worrying how to fix your voice, why not sing at a more leisurely pace, and improve at a leisurely pace.

And perhaps your choice of song. Perhaps you could pick a song that suits your range. And yes sad to say your diction is quite bad. You sang some parts of the melody wrongly in Hostage/Ren Zhi

And does anyone know where I can get a professional over my vocals? Any contacts and names?

Hi jianrong!

I've had plenty of people tell me I will never be able to sing too .. don't let it get you down! I'm surprised that you've had singing teachers tell you that though - it's their business to teach people to sing, so their opinion is worth listening to.

Anyway .. I can't hear any major problem with your voice. I notice you often have a "duh" sound from a lowered larynx, especially on the lower notes. I also notice the staccato sound which is quite extreme. But those are trained into your voice, so they can be trained out again.

Daniel said "if i can't speak clear, i can't sing", right? Are you willing to put in the time and effort to learn to speak clearly? Even I as a native english speaker have to work hard on my pronunciation to train with SLS method. Speaking pure vowels is part of how the method works. If you were able to speak clearly would Daniel be able to teach you then?

PS Ankh doesn't think I'm capable of singing, but Daniel thinks I am .. you can conclude from that whatever you want.
