Hi all!

I am really really interested in picking up the lead electric guitar but I've totally no idea where to start. I have no musical background at all, but my friends have told me that it isn't really an issue when it comes to learning the electric guitar. I need advise on where to start.

Should I attend begginer courses? Or do I get a private tutor? I've tried calling Yamaha yesteday night, but all of their courses are currently full. Anyone has any advise for me? Or teachers to recommend? Greatly appreciated :D

err...no...

do you know how to play the acoustic guitar? If not, don't bother playing the electric first...its a very bad idea...you should always play the acoustic first to get finger strength...besides,i find acoustic much more fun...

maybe because i suck in electric :p

oh yeah...you don't really need those courses...you can simply learn by yourself...learn how to read tabs and you should be find for a long while..

but its up to you...having a teacher of course helps, but its whether you practise on your own whenever you can...

Hey, i've never exactly learnt the acoustic guitar before. But I really have no interest at all acoustic guitars. It's just my personal preference haha, I am more the rock and metla kinda guy. yea so do you still strongly recommend I learn acoustic 1st? Is it possible to build up my finger strength if i train really hard for electric?

there's no reason you can't start with electric. lots of people started with electric, myself included. it would be better for you to take lessons to learn theory and techniques and all that, otherwise you might find yourself just playing from tabs all the time.

not sure about the finger strength part cos i started off with classical guitar, thats slightly easier than acoustic i think cos the strings are further apart, but when i switched to electric, it was smooth :)
anyway, i agree with the replies that having a teacher helps in the theory part. one difficult part of theory is getting the timing right. many a time i've practiced tabs only to find i got everything but the timing correct so my version and the teacher's version sounds totally diff. so yea i'd advise u to have a teacher, can be a school or private doesnt matter. but if u wan private, the teacher available section should prove quite useful :)

many people started with a non-electric guitar primarily on grounds of affordability- they can't afford electric guitars (at least this was the case back then when i started). electric guitars are more affordable today & i'd say it's much easier to learn with an electric in terms of playability. if it's within your means, get one 8-)

hey bro, theres another thread with the same issues being discussed.

hmm, starting to play leads? in my opinion, every leadguitarist has to know how to play rhythm guitar parts.

lead & rhythm are ingredients of a song structure, you still use the same thing- guitar.

Agreed. Don't focus solely on lead aite, you still need to learn proper rhythm. It helps you on your timing and it's the backbone of the song, forms the structure. Work on both, and you'll be an awesome guitarist :)
