Noise-cancelling earphones

for lack of knowledge of a better place to put this thread under...

Does anyone have any experience with the above? i'm talking about noise cancelling earphones for on-the-go purposes, not in the studio.

Need to know stuff like:
1) what are the brands available? earphones, not headphones. and any reccomandations for the best money-performance ratio (trying to refrain from using cheap and good =P ) ones?
2) are they compatible with any mp3 player? (heard that some sony ones can only be played by sony players)
3) does the noise cancelling thing require a battery on its own or does it suck up power from the player? if so, does it suck up a lot of power?
4) is it really that effective compared to a set of normal in ear/earbud type earphones?

thanks in advance for the help!

i use a pair of in ear monitors(IEM),Westone UM1s for your exact purpose and they have served me damn well. too well. almost got knocked down a couple times.98% of external noise 'cancelled' aka drowned out. no active circuitry involved, just good old ear stuffing.very comfortable too i should add.

that should be good enough eh?
like thorns said, head down to the jaben shop to try and see what you like.
