For this year’s National Arts Education (NAE) Award 2008, nine secondary schools will be receiving their accolades from RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew, Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts, and for Education for their good arts practices and programmes on 18 August 2008.
The Silver award will be presented to Deyi Secondary School and a total of 8 Bronze awards will go to the following secondary schools; Bowen, Commonwealth, Mayflower, Nan Chiau High, Siglap, St Hilda’s, St Margaret’s and Zhonghua.
The NAE Award, inaugurated in 2003, recognises and rewards schools that consistently incorporate the arts for a holistic curriculum that provides opportunities for their students to be engaged in the arts. The NAE Award is given to secondary schools, junior colleges and centralised institute, and primary schools in alternate years. The evaluation criteria cover three areas of school policy and planning, implementation of programmes, as well as arts achievement and arts culture.
Director of Audience Development, NAC, Ms Chua Ai Liang, says, “The NAE framework is to help schools to put in place good arts education processes. There is now a creative and conducive culture in many schools for every child to discover and learn through the arts. We are greatly encouraged by the schools' commitment to make arts experiences more engaging for their students. Schools that have participated previously have also continued to use the framework to help them in their planning and review."
Responses from the 28 participating schools were enthusiastic, with 12 taking part for the first time and out of these, one garnered a Bronze award while two obtained Certificates of Accomplishment.
Participating schools have also shown remarkable progression. Silver award winner Deyi Secondary School had previously clinched the Bronze award in 2006. Likewise, six of the Bronze award winners have previously received Certificates of Accomplishment and Participation. The NAE Award has a 4-year validity period to acknowledge the sustained commitment from winning schools.
