NEA suspends Newton hawker stall’s licence for overcharging tourist

(Tanglin’s Best BBQ Seafood Stall) at Singapore’s Newton Hawker Centre has had its licence suspended for three months for overcharging.


The National Environment Agency (NEA) said it had investigated the incident of overcharging of American Michael Rigby who was billed a total of S$491, including S$239 for eight tiger prawns.
NEA said it suspended the licence because the stall has breached licensing conditions.
The stall assistant involved in the incident will also be debarred from working at the Newton Food Centre for a year. — CNA/ir/de

i think that there are more stall owners/vendors,even some retailers in shopping centres that deserve these punishments as well...

these ppl are tarnishing the image of singapore and singaporeans..

Are their pics and stallowners' names published? If it wasn't who is to know if they're 'subletting' the stall to 'another' tenant for the 3 month period?

Enforcement is one big issue.

It's a shame this sort of thing happens - the majority of stall owners at Newton are honest folk just trying to make a living. I live right near there and go there a couple of times a week - you can tell the good from the bad quite easily.

Also, one should not begrudge how much money these people make. Not all of them are rolling in it and the work is very hard - imagine standing in a tiny non-ventilated area next to burning hot stoves from 8pm until 4am. I know one guy there who sells chicken wings; he sells an average of 400 of them a night at $1 a go. $400 a night. Let's say he takes in $12000 in a month. He has costs (of the chicken), two guys to pay, rental and so forth. What's left after isn't going to exactly make him rich. If he is closed down, can he afford a '3 month holiday'?

Here is the picture of the stall from the straits times. The store number is reported to be 43, at a corner and next to a DBS atm.

I know that stall. Normally there is a nicely dressed gentleman in glasses who I think is the owner who is not too pushy in attendance. Hmm.

interestingly the stall at the right (Din Muslim) was recently closed (2 months ago) for a month for touting.

now that theres a "clampdown" from NEA, and patrons are thinning, i say its a great time to go there for a cheaper and better quality meal!

I feel that this is a lesson to be learnt. Looking at the news about price overcharging in business is a shoutout to those who is into business, please don't overcharge your customers. I believe this uncle, who's managing his stall have been overcharging customers long time before this. Only now his game is over. If you do good to people, people will do good to you but if you do bad things to people, then people will hate you. Hopefully this uncle got a big family, coz there will be too many leftovers like all the tiger prawns. Newton anyone?

if by the usual definition of tourist, that prolly mean they have some extra money that enable them to visit other country for the sake of sightseeing and some spending

it would be a bit weird if tourist got money to go overseas, look see look see, but not spending much, especially in context of singaland, where theres prolly nothing much to see(short nation history, limited art scene, limited old buildings thats really authentic and not refurbished, limited wetland, not much exotic animals other then human eating white tiger etc) other then eat, shopping, bonking
