"A male wildlife keeper was fatally mauled by a white tiger while cleaning an enclosure in Whangarei's Zion Wildlife Gardens today," New Zealand police said in a statement.

A report said visitors to the park had seen the attack, although this was not immediately confirmed by police.

An Auckland man told the Fairfax newspaper group he had seen the mauling.

"It was very, very frightening," said the man, who declined to be named.

Despite the efforts of the second keeper and a rapid response from other wildlife park staff, the tiger would not let the park worker go and he died at the scene, police said.

The tiger was later destroyed by wildlife park staff.

Fairfax's Stuff website reported eight foreign tourists at the park were understood to have witnessed the incident.

Its a double tragedy I say. They bring these wild animals into captivity and when something like this happens they conveniently kill the animal.

it's hard to believe that a tiger would kill a man that didn't provoke him. but then again, they are animals, and their instincts are different from ours.

if animals think the same as humans (you kill my kind, then i must kill you for the goodness of the world), humans would be extinct long ago.

humans are the most cruel creatures on earth, i tell you. tell me you dont kill a mosquito just cause its resting on ur arm.

From what I read, they are also territorial animals. They might not kill you for food but will do if you step into their territory.

That same mosquitoe that rest on ur shoulder have the ability to whoop the life outta u with Malaria, Dengue etc.

So who is the cruel one? Similar to egg and the chicken question...

haha bro, recently a cabbie complained to me that his friend's daughter was in the hospital due to being bitten by an aides mosquito. Bill cost him about 40-50k.

One little mosquito not only drains blood, but also money and health  Dont take risks :D

if u ask me,theres sumth wrong with these white tigers.they're not a naturally occurring breed, they were 'manufactured'.mebbe tht messed up their genes or sumth man, making them unpredictable.

They are natural, just that they are found only in some remote part of the world. Tiger or lions or any other carnivores if they se you as tresspassers you'll pay with your life.

they're not....only 1 was natural. Then they bred from there ( since the gene pool is so small, they messed up alot.)

Actually just because they aren't commonly seen doesn't mean they are very very rare ;)
It's actually genetics most "normal" orange tigers have the "white tiger gene" in them.
However as it is a recessive gene, white tigers only occur in a homozygous pairing of genes.

I'd kill a mosquito even if it wasn't resting on my arm..
