New voice for new year!

The name is David Bian, I was a Professional singer in the 70's and I've trained many local singers in the past.

Please come for the hangout and help me and the rest out :( please please please? *tugs sleeve*

Hi David!

It's not that I can't sing today that I'm arguing against. I'm quite happy to accept criticism, especially specific and constructive criticism :P

What I'm arguing against is what you say here:

Have to accept the fact. You're not cut out to be a singer and no matter how you practice you won't sound good.

What you said is that I will never be able to sing, no matter what. Now that's total nonsense. All of us have vocal instruments that are much the same. The only difference is in how we train and use them.

You also didn't mention even one area in which I could improve :( If you're simply going to say "You can't sing" without saying why, then it's better to stay quiet. That's why I had a go at that other guy. He was much less polite, which is why I was not polite with him :)

Yeaaaahhh I'm kinda wondering on that line too, cos it's either I haven't improved at all or everyone else around me is deaf :/

Actually these days I've been wondering if it's the latter or the equipment I use or something..

Can I post a song to you and tell me what you think or something?

Well yeah that line was a bit too harsh but like i've said, if you wanna sing just for friends and family at a karaoke session its totally fine.

But posting your covers here basically mean that you wanna go somewhere with that singing and you really wanna improve on it.

I really appreciate the enthusiasm and spirit by you bro, but yeah, sometimes people use too much salt and i guess you'll just have to reason out properly.

Ankh, yea man, if you are who you say, in the old days things were done in a particular way but with technology and pedagogy that has been put in to improve singing has been researched and stuff. So there is that slight possibility that our bro can actually make it through after his lessons.

I haven't really had any formal lesson whatsoever. Not to brag but its in my bloodline to be a musician. I think Ankh should know this 70s singer named Eddie Ahmad. He's my granduncle and the rest of the grands were mostly cabaret singers. So no worries to find singers for a wedding on our side. =)

So my point is, you should probably think about where are you gonna put this singing into. A career or as a hobby. Either way, some people here at soft are experienced and definitely some people here know more than some of us. And whatever criticism that they give (whether Randy, Paula or Simon-like), it depends on us how we wanna take it, bro.

All the best! =)

P.S.
Ankh, come for the singers outing? =) I'm helping out sage on this one, so maybe we can hook up prior to it.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I do see your point of view (about talent vs training), both David and KhaiHan. I guess that I will be the first person you know who gains a beautiful voice through training alone :)

Unfortunately I can't tell you how long it will take.. I've been training for 1 year now. You don't want to hear what I was like at the start of that 1 year!

My apologies to all!!

Sorry brtherl, I've not heard you sing previously so I really can't comment how you've improved. But honestly, that wasn't an average singing. I have no intention of belittling your ability in singing.

This is my view on how you post your thread. You're trying to say that good vocals with 'theory logic' works. But that ain't a fact. After listening to it again, I would advise you to sing the way you wanna sing instead of trying to imitate the original singer. Not too much stress on the diphram. You'll do that if you're playing blowing instruments. Let it flow naturally. Do not be too stiff. You MUST enjoy singing if not you'll sound like a robot even though you have that vocals ability. Try this, and post another. I'll definitely hear it and give you a comment.

Khai:
I've heard of Eddie but not too sure anymore. Used to play with Grass Onion in the 70's. Played along side with Aziz Khan, Anita Sarawak, Unwanted, etc.. Too many and I'm forgetting them all.

Sage:
Yes, I'll comment on your singing if you want me to. You can post it here or PM me as I can be harsh at times. Hahaha....!!!

:X I'll try take your harsh words. Isn't much up there tho cos I can't release the rest of the songs I did...

Thanks for the advice David!

I will definitely be posting again, once I feel I have something worth showing.

There have been times when my voice has sounded really great .. but usually it has disappeared by the next day. So the way I see much of my training now is learning how to access that way of singing, and then training it to be stable.

The first piece of the puzzle, how to access good singing, that is pretty much solved now. I am using some exercises given to me by my SLS teacher, in combination with a few exercises from David Jones (voiceteacher.com). Using those, I can access an open throat and connected vocal cords in 100% of training sessions. I'll make a recording of this next chance I get.

The second piece, stabilizing that voice, well I think I will have to go back for further lessons. There's also the question of singing above chest voice, which I cannot do yet. I can open my throat on the higher notes using the SLS exercises, but I cannot yet close my vocal cords on those notes.

Regarding "theory logic" vs "feeling and freedom" .. I have a problem in that my voice is trained in a bad way. I speak with a very small, breathy, squeezed voice. If I don't pay attention to my technique, then I sound bad. So I cannot sing without some "theory logic" :) I do realize I must be free as well, but if I simply sing "naturally", it sounds awful. So I feel that I must train my voice to open up first, then let that become natural, and then sing freely. That's where I am now.
