New to home recording

Im on a budget to do home recording for my guitar , basically yesterday I tried plugging in a karaoke mic into the line in of my com's soundcard, however I am unable to hear anything out of my com nor record it.
I intened to mic the amp instead of recording straight from my guitar.
how do i go about doing this?

Did you check your soundcard setting, whether you activated the input to accept incoming signals from the soundcard's input? By default they are probably checked off. Karaoke mics are powered by batteries, aren't they? Shud check if your mic has power or not. Direct input like that should work, but sound quality prob wont be that good.
